Flyfishing

Greetings....new to the forum.  I have chased redfish out of a kayak with a fly rod for the last 10 year.  I tend to get deep in my hobbies....as I'm sure you all understand.  I tie my own flies and all the rods I fish with are build from a blank.....I put it all together, including gluing up and shaping my own grips for my fly rods.....nuts, right?!

I have been an avid fly-fisherman for my entire life. Does your handle have anything to do with Redfish lake? Probably not. I have built a couple rods, one from a Scott blank which is my salmon rod and the other from a Batson Rainshadow blank. I went way overboard with the Rainshadow and now the rod is too nice to go trudging through bushes and rocks with. Grew up fishing in Idaho, Oregon and Montana.

Hey Wade....I'm a bum for Redfish.  Saltwater fish here in florida that is perfect for a fly rod....it backs and tails and I hunt those suckers out of a kayak.  I have a batson blank for panfish.  I have a Lamiglas that I love but has been on back up since I broke the top 2 inches off the tip and now just have it in the office.  I have a DanCraft that I fish now.  One thing about Dan Craft rods is that one has to overload them by at least two line weights for the rod to load.

My son in law, Chris Barclay, makes custom fly rods that are really wonderful rods. He has done a little fly fishing in North Carolina when visiting.

I've been out of the loop with conflicting hobbies, grandfather hood, not to mention work.  Trout season opens in a few days.  Catch a big one!

Wade...that looks killer!  Build a another rod just like that and use some burl cork.  Takes a beating and the dirtier it get, the better it feels in your hand. I'll have to post a picture later, just don't have one on my iPad right now.

Man that grip looks sweet.

I plan to. Nothing beats the feel and look of a well used cork grip.

Here's a pic of the rod I fish right now.  Built it several years ago and has held up fine.  I used the titanium bendy rodguides that flex and never corrode.....

The grip right now is much darker from use.  It sits between my legs while I paddle my kayak and gets a fair amount of paddle drip.  I used a fuji foregrip as the fighting butt.....awesome.....inexpensive and never loosens.  Also, I use rubberized cork (1/4" ring" at the top and bottom of my grip to prevent any chipping.  Kayak fishing in salt water is very tough on the gear.
