tweed tone pot wiring
« on: August 24, 2016, 10:05:02 pm »
In my first Tweed Overdrive build I used a slightly modified 5E3 tone stack. With a 680 pf cap on the overdrive side. As I build my second, similar amp I am wondering how the sound will be affected by changing back to a 500 pf in the overdrive section. Is there a variation that you guys have tried that gives more/better results?

390p to 680p range has worked well for me

On the D'Mars, I eventually went with a .0047 to ground like on the illustration on the right. This seems "smoother" to me but it doesn't allow you to add the higher frequencies into the OD tone.

Thank you. Have you always wired them up tone lug 1 to middle volume. Or do you use lug 1 to lug 1 wiring like the modified 5E3 version? What's the difference?

I have wired them usually like is attached.   DaGeezer tended to wire them more like a traditional 5E3.  There is not much difference if any to my ears.

I have the .0047 to ground as per the original TOS schematic. I feel like the tone is a little dark overall. Will removing this cap brighten things up? I am also thinking of going with a 500pf to achieve a bit brighter tone.

To brighten up the tone try either 500p or 390p.  Removing that cap will NOT make it brighter.
