how not to build an amp?
« on: May 31, 2017, 11:57:45 pm »
see pics.

bought this as salvage - was a boo-teek amp mfg. by a guy that lived around these parts.

nasti with an i nasty. didn't even bother to try and repair it. gutted it for the mercury mag. PT, choke, & OT. salvaged the switches, jacks, fuse holder. the rest is in my circular file. cabinet is nice and has a pair of eminence red coat 10" speakers. look close where power cord enters, the input jack is in relation to the rectifier tube and and the power supply filters' proximity to the volume and tone pots, and the tube line-up is in reverse order... there's more but those stand out the most.

You mean, a kit that was built by a first timer?  :icon_biggrin:  Looks like my first attempt in many ways.

john, honestly, i have no clue, and i really don't want to bash anyone so i withheld the brand and the brand moniker.
it was a parallel SE design that was "unreliable" according to the original owner, it failed on three occasions and i would imagine that a lot of the insulation burns could be attributed to that. my favorite was the input coax floating by rectifier tube socket.

the OT looks like a copy of a hammond 125ESE.

My 1st "how not to build" was a 5c3? champ, worked flawlessly.  My Son swapped it for some guitar work, the new owner wanted to put it in a "Steam-punk" chassis-head, I told him he might as well gut it and start over since it was a spaghetti fest.  Sure enough, when he opened it up, it never worked again!  The parts did make a nice steam-punk amp

I used to make fun of my first build.  Not anymore. :icon_biggrin:

I understand you not wanting to say the builder as it could have been someone else muck it up.  I do not buy and Boutique amps anyway, however I do think Mark does a great job with Victoria.  Solid builder and a really nice guy.  I called him once he helped me tremendously on the purchase of a real 57 Tweed Deluxe.  Rather he helped me not to get it.

my first circuit build was a 2-tube intercom we had to build when i was attending vocational trade school in new england. yup, it was kind of a hack job but it worked. after assembly, we had to pair up and test our intercoms. some worked, some made obnoxious noises, some made no noise & some leaked smoke.

our second project was the all-american-5 superhet AM receiver with a PT and 6V tubes. mine was neater than most and worked but not well, as i didn't follow the "suggested" layout given by our lab instructor, hey i was a knuckle-headed 15 year old: still am. :p point is, not even my first build look that bad, but in all fairness the guidance from the lab instructor likely averted that. if i were left to my own, there's no telling...

someone SOLD that mess and that someone BOUGHT it...for good money. i paid more than i should have for it, but overall i came out about even.
