board drilling template (was: Hi everyone)
« on: November 08, 2017, 11:13:37 pm »
I am new to this and was wondering where I might be able to buy a metal board drilling template like or similar to the one Hoffman Amps sold in the past. It seems that would really keep things lined up and the holes going straight up and down through the board instead of at an angle. I  have a drill press to use as well but anything that could help get the job get done faster and cleaner would be a welcome addition. Any help in finding one would be appreciated.

PS.....Great board

Here's one. https://tubeamplifierparts.com/circuit-board-supplies/drill-templates.html

Thank you very much David. That's a big help.  I'm sure as I go i'll have plenty of questions about builds and buys. I will definitely make this a prominent stop

To the best of my knowledge, there is only ONE link that Doug prefers to not be posted and it is the one mentioned in this thread.  IF my memory serves me correctly, this individual took some ideas that Doug had in building Hoffman style turret boards and never honored or communicated with Doug about this even though Doug reached out to him for communication.

With respect, Tubenit

Ohhh. I really had no idea about that. Sorry. I did suggest this is the best place for parts and info though.

Didn't Hoffman move into the 21st century? A virtual template? You click your dots, his robot does the holes, and it ships back fast.

Yes, there's situations where having a holy metal slab is better. But for a few amps a year, Hoffman is set-up, whereas I would have to clear the Xmas junk off the drillpress, find a drill bit....

Doug's CNC drilled boards are cheap and perfect.  You'll never get one as accurate using the old tech drilling guide.  That's why Doug doesn't sell them any more.

I stopped having the templates made a long time ago

Right after I built my CNC machine I realized I did not need to use a template any more
Plus they cost about $50 each to have made and that was with a qty of 50

Using my on line design program is easy and it submits your design to me
Then my CNC machine makes it for you

The program looks like this

Well I looked on the Hoffman board and It said the idem was discontinued. Which is why I came here to ask where I could find one. When I need other parts I will certainly give Doug first crack. With that in mind what is everyone using larger holes in chassis. something the size of a 6L6 tube socket on down? Thanks

These two step bits do most of my big holes. Greenlee is pricey but they hold up very well. Harbor Freight has a very cheap set that may do a few chassis before getting dull.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

My on line custom board program has been re-vamped
It now uses svg graphics and it works on all browsers and mobile devices that I have tested it on

Check out the examples of customer created boards I posted here

It's amazing you would be the one that would answer this because it was your revibe unit page I was looking at that brought the question to mind. Thanks for the info.
