Helping new guys
« on: December 28, 2017, 10:46:46 am »
Here is my bud Randy Beavers and his completed 6L6 Deluxe Reverb.  Turret board construction and the typical big iron I have come to love on these builds.
Randy used teflon wire with cloth on the heaters.  He did a great job and learned a lot along the way.

I think it's a good thing for any of you experienced builders out there to help someone interested in this craft.

haha!  In case you're wondering, I am looking into a separate shop from the garage now!  24x24 with an upstairs loft.

I've done a couple "classes" for musician types that don't have a clue why a soldering iron only gets hot at one end, or a meter has a red wire and a black one :think1:
It makes me smile when they are able to make proper measurements, SAFELY, can they fix a toasted system, no, but they can give me good clues and even fix the minor stuff so I don't have to :icon_biggrin:

Given enough time and patients we can all contribute to the craft I think and teach safety too.  I enjoy it myself and the look on their faces at startup is priceless.

Wow! This, "new guys", sure has nice gear. Unfortunately the clutter of the bench belays the freshness of that "new guys" smell....  So also the tube function generator. What did he do in his former life? I'm going to guess: Field Service tech of some sort. He's got that million dollar smile that the customers love.

Definitely know what you mean though. My base talent is teaching and when you find a good student it's very rewarding.

Lesson number nine.....Lose the wedding ring while working on high voltage amplifiers.  :icon_biggrin:   I wish I could find some folks who want to learn the art of amp building but I guess I don't get out enough.

I like a guy who keeps the fire extinguisher near the bench.

Had one 35 feet away at work. Here I have four in house and sheds (but no bench :dontknow:).

Very nice job on that cool little amp.

Nope, that is a reliced fender grille my bud ordered from Mather.  BTW, out of all the cabinets I have ordered Mather is my all time favorite.  Their stuff is flawless.
He had the chassis and faceplate set already from an old Fender.

Sweet.  I keep trying to get some of that aged grill cloth but it's always out of stock.  I've heard it can be aged with a tea solution but I've never tried that.  Maybe I could hang some regular new cloth on the wall in a hookah den. :l2:

it's very nice of you or anyone to take the time. He did a very fine job on it. I'm in the process of trying to build a re vibe unit (my first build) and if I don't gross up something somewhere it will be an act of God.

I have mine at the end of my bench, MRI compliant, NOT :think1:
Boss gave me a part# said order 1 for each unit, 10 at the time, I did, the cylinder was fine, the head wasn't.  Manufacturer sent 10 new ones, said pitch the others :icon_biggrin: barn, stove, 2 benches, furnace......

I’d give my right arm to be able to find someone to take me under their wing and teach me their years of knowledge and experience. I’ve been building for the last year and have done about 7 or 8 different projects and have learned a lot on my own but it would be an honor to learn directly from someone who has done this for 20+ years.

Btw, this forum and especially the moderators have been extremely helpful and giving of their time and experience. Just would love a chance at some, hands on, one on one, Q&A sessions.

Are there cuts on the corners or do you think he is heat gunning the tolex around them?
