Super Reverb Project - Jensen, Oxford, CTS
« on: February 04, 2018, 02:37:46 pm »
I purchased a chassis for at 1965 pre CBS super reverb.   I want to make this my project and am wondering what speaker was the most prevalent with this amplifier at least from 1964-1967, or most associated with the classic SR tone?

CTS alnico- IMO, the best speakers sounding stock speakers ever installed in the super R. jensen p10q are my second choice. if i were to build new, i'd probably look for a quartet of JBL D110 or K110.

i own a 65 that had a very hard life, has a 69 PT and most of the blue ajax needed to be replaced. i installed a quartet of eminence 'lil buddies: a hemp cone 10" that's very respectable sounding speaker for the $$ in the super R. another good choice are eminence legend 1028. have not heard weber, although have been told they are better than anything i have listed so far - just don't want to spend weber $$$ to find out.

your ears are your guide, google sound clips from super R on youtube - see if someone has installed speakers that may appeal to you. what others like, may not be what you even consider.

Thanks Pete.   How are re-cones of old Jensen speakers?  I know Celestions just aren't the same, but how would a quartet of C10R speakers do being re-coned?

respectfully, but not a clue: too many variables; same paper; motor materials; re-assembly accuracy (air gap); etc.? IMO you're better off searching for a modern replacement, rather than buying re-cones citing the aforementioned. i bought a quad of CTS alnico re-coned by a "reputable" speaker rebuilder on the west coast: 3 of the 4 had VC rubbing and were junk. they were bought from a  fleaybay seller.
