AO-35 PT and OT in Stout TMB
« on: February 11, 2019, 08:33:10 pm »
Can I substitute the PT and OT from a Hammond AO-35 amplifier in my Stout TMB build? The power transformer secondary is 50 to 60 volts lower than the one shown in the Stout schematic. The preamp component values appear similar to a Phoenix Carmen Ghia clone which uses the Hammond transformers, but the PI and output stage values are quite different.

I'd like to save money by using the Hammond transformers (already own them). Would changing the 5y3 rectifier to a more efficient rectifier help?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. As you can tell, I'm new to tube amplifiers.

The AO-35 schematic shows the PT secondary as 290-0-290. This is perfect for the Stout. The AO-35 OT is also perfect for the Stout. In fact, the AO-35 PT and OT are a good choice for just about any EL84 amp.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

I have the AO-35 power transformer mounted in the Stout TMB chassis. I know which wires are the primary and secondary, but not the phase of each pair. Do I need to determine the phase of the secondary, relative to the primary when wiring the the transformer?
