Looking to build a Modified 5F6A
« on: August 30, 2019, 07:49:16 am »
I've been in here before although this is my first time posting.  I'm looking to build a 5F6A as my first build, I know that this is a huge undertaking for a first AMP.  I will be doing this with the assistance of my father who is an electrical engineer of 50 years, so I believe I am good hands.  I know the approach is to start small, but sadly my father has been diagnosed with cancer and we really don't know how long he has.  For the past year we have been working on pedals, and I know he really is enjoying the bonding experience.  Amps are slightly out of his comfort zone but he and I recently brought my 25 year old blues deville back to life.

I would like to build the 5F6A as a head unit only, preferably with front facing controls so more like a Marshal head arrangement. I need to know what size chassis is best.  I also want to load this with all the best parts.  This might be the last thing I have to remind myself of my father.  So either Allen transformers or Mercury Magnetics.  But I don't have all the best ideas, which is why I am posting here.  I want something strong and reliable.

So what type of components should I be looking for thanks in advance for suggestions.

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

That's the look, but I was hoping for a chassis that would either have room for the tubes on top instead of hanging from the back, seems like recipe for disaster when transporting.  I may see about buying a blank blackface chassis and let the tubes hang.  I just prefer the controls at the front.  I own a tweed amp now and a blackface, it's nice when you don't have to stand over the amp to see what is going on.

Edit: Sorry I just looked at that again, the tube configuration is perfect.  I knew coming here was a great idea.
