Should I buy a Class D amp
« on: December 26, 2019, 07:23:37 am »
HI

Like most I'm thinking of buying a lighter weigh amp and cab. The hot items today are the Class D amps. I've owned a Walter Woods (blue light) and it was good but I had that more than 10-12 years next to a Sunn 2000 and a Traynor YBA3. I sold it.
Recently I've played through a Demeter and a GK Fusion 500. Both with nice results. The Demeter was with a single Bergantino HDN 112-12" and the GK was with a Bergantino pair of HDN112's. If I did move on one I'd like a hybrid to have some tube front end.

I want to conquer the amp side of this first, then move for a speaker solution. Currently, I'm looking at the GK Fusion 800 that has 3 -12ax7 tubes.

Thanks for any help!

It sounds to me like you know what you're doing.

If the class D amps were bad, the top brands wouldn't be making them.

Stick with a known brand, and if possible,  get a protection plan (warranty) from your retailer.

Check all the forums and google reviews of anything you may plan on buying, look for cases of problems,  not just how good does it sound  .

But, like I said, based on your post, it seems like you know what you're doing   :icon_biggrin:

Thanks, but I have to give some credit to this forum.

I was  going between a few units and the front runner was a GK Fusion with a preamp tube. Having the tube was a big part of the picture. Then, I wandered in to a Music Go Round used store and I tried out the Bugera Veyron amp. The amp has 3 12ax7's which caught my attention. It was interesting to play and while at the store I searched out some reviews and most of them positive. For $350 I took it home and I still have it. After I took it home one of the tubes was flaky, probably at the store too but I didn't notice it. I went back to the store and they swapped the tube. There were 2 Bugera Premium tubes and a newer Sovtek. The Sovtek was bad and they gave me a JJ, After some reading the Bugera tubes, although Chinese, are getting good reviews. I left the Bugera's in there and I had a GE which went in.

I've had the app since after my post and I have to say it really has some vibe and power.
