Tube Preamp Pedal - DAW recording
« on: January 09, 2020, 09:43:36 am »
Hi,

I have been studying the one-off (possibly two versions) of the tube preamp pedal.  I am impressed by its size and the use of the small transformer in reverse.  I am working on a music project for my own songs and wonder as to its usefulness as a guitar preamp going in directly into my soundcard (Old beautiful Echo Mona).  I have a few other tube based preamps I have cobbled together that sound terrific running live where their inherent noise is masked. When I plug them into the soundcard though the noise is very discernible.

I recognize that I can plug the guitar in directly and use amp modeling but it just is not the same.  As a player I rely on the sound of the guitar going in a great deal.

Question 1: With the adjustments made by rerouting wires, removing the relay and such would this little pedal be a good choice for recording direct?

Question 2: I love the sound of the EF86. Would it work to have an EF86 as the second tube recognizing that the pinout is different?

I've used the little torroidal transformer for a couple preamp projects.  I love that setup.

Question 1, yes, if your layout is good, it should be fine for recording.

Question 2, EF86 would be a different schematic in the audio path,  but the torroidal transformer would be fine to power it.

Pardon my ignorance, what tube pedal are you talking about that is sounding so fine? I would be interested.

Thanks for the answer nandrewjackson.  Not that I need another project but you know sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.  It looks pretty cool to me and I have a lot of spare parts lying around.

Best,

James
