Albasia Plywood for cabs, anyone?
« on: June 18, 2020, 04:26:26 am »
Hey guys,

A while ago I was trying to design a speaker cabinet, looking at doing something similar to a THD style 212 cab, but with a modular back (slit opening or closed), and detuning by only having one 12 inch driver in a hole, the other empty.
So you can go between fully loaded, semi open back, and closed detuned.
That or an oversized 1x12 design.

I noted that those cabs where considered very light (have never seen one, BTW, just like the dimensions and makes sense to me). So I looked around for light plywood.

Anyway, I found a local supplier here in South Africa who does Lite Ply, made out of Albasia.
https://www.universalply.com/product/litewood-lightweight-plywood/

Stronger than Birch, and as light as Pine. Minimal chance of voids.
I haven't seen a board in person yet, never got round to going to visit them. Would want to do a tap test or something.
But I still want to build a cab out of it to see what it sounds like.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks

Sorry I know it's a random post.

If I had the funds now I'de build one in Albasia, one in Birch and see the difference.
Let's see if the heavens rain down cash for me to follow these weird ideas.
