Sunn Solaris tremolo clicking
« on: June 20, 2020, 04:59:21 pm »
I have a 1969 Sunn Solaris very much like a sunn amp that I have seen posted by Slucky. The tremolo is ticking and i don't know
how to stop it. This circuit / layout does not resemble a fender so I am somewhat lost.  Is any one familiar with this?

The ticking seems to calm down when the depth is all of the way up.

On a vintage Fender amp, I remove ticking with 0.022 cap in parallel with the neon light.
This Sunn use a bulb lamp, I don't know if it will work. Cost nothing to try

That drawing is scrunched. I re-drew it, but it is too nice today to think about it.

Actually the 1000uFd cap across the Zener stands out.

The only 1000 uf caps i know of so far in this amp are the two on the printed circuit board  I thought i replaced them with what i originally found in the amp. I only see 1 of them on the schematic but I just assumed the the schematic is a newer revision. I will look in to that.  I get the feeling that the older schematic of the Sentura 2 might better match the pcb that is in my amp. If you want to suggest any changes I will give it a try.

Do you think that I should try a  50uf  150v cap in place of one of those 1000uf making it closer to that Solaris schematic ?

not sure "cap value" is so much the issue as it's old, prone to arc over, break-down, cause problem.
swap it with anything 47uF to 1000uF and see if the ticks change/stop
Went Class C for efficiency

Thanks Will swap the caps. I thought I bought those caps new on ebay 5 or 6 years ago but they could have been old when i got them.
also I was trying to ground the foot switch plug to see what would happen . The only jumper that I had handy was a cap drain with a 10 k resister in it . But when I hooked it up the clicking calmed down and the tremolo seemed to still be working. I also want to get the reverb tank hooked up and see how that effects it.
