Are they even worth it?
« on: October 26, 2020, 07:08:52 am »
Picked up an old Magnavox console radio/turntable, and well as, a Packard Bell. Bought them to salvage as much as I could, and I’m wondering if it’s even worth it to save the speakers? The Mag had a 15”, with a little 4” or 5” mounted on a spider in the middle of it, and the Bell had a 10”. All of them still work. I was most excited about the 10”, but if they were worth a squirt it may be a consideration to build a funky 1x15” + 1x10” cab for them. Don’t know much about speakers this old and I’ve been having trouble sourcing and info. Thanks all.

let your ears be the guide
start with something you "know the sound", swap speaker, better, worse, no change...........
Went Class C for efficiency

Guitar speakers are much tougher than HiFi speakers. A guitar amp will quickly destroy a HiFi speaker if played with much volume.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

The Packard Bell might be a decent speaker.  It might be worth saving for an old radio but not for guitar.
I've found that with older speakers (60+ years) the paper in the cones tends to develop small tears around the perimeter,

You can patch them with white glue and tissue but it kind of gets pointless after a while.

I finally trashed all my old speakers, the law of diminishing returns prevailed.

How bout organ speakers? I’ve got a pair of 12’s from a Hammond L-122 I cannibalized.
