Making holes in tolex

So, I just tolexed a speaker cab that I’d built.  This is a first for me.  Didn’t go too bad.  The corners aren’t perfect, but that’s what the corner protectors are for.   Which brings me to my question.  I predrilled all holes for handles, feet, back panel, etc.  I’m worried that driving screws straight through tolex will catch on the screw and pull the tolex.  Any tricks for opening up those holes?  I work in the medical field, was thinking about snagging a5mm skin punch, but I’m sure there’s an easier way.

I use a conical soldering iron tip. Like this...

I started off using a skin punch, and it works ok, but sluckey's method of the hot conical soldering iron works far better, and is easier.

Truth be told, I don't like the residue on my pristine Hakko tips.  So, I have a "special" nail that is heated with a butane torch, and it makes short work of the holes.

Yes, this procedure will make a soldering iron tip useless for soldering. I have one old tip that I use only for hole burning in plastics. I also use it to melt/seal the cut end of nylon string and synthetic ropes.

Excellent.  I have an old soldering iron that I used before I got a temperature controlled system.  Should be perfect for the task.  I'm sure this will smell awesome!
