10” speakers that suit open back CABs
« on: February 14, 2022, 11:50:26 pm »
Hi All,

I’ve been reading various different reviews, comments and posts across the web to understand what 10” speakers may be better for open back cabs vs closed back.

One though is to identify a number commercial amps at different price points and look at what they use.
Another more expensive approach is to buy several different types and see what works best.

In particular I would like understand what is better for a small cab with a low wattage amp or one attenuated to “bedroom volumes” vs a larger cab  for small stage / keeping up with a drummer and a larger wattage amp.

I have considered for example a Celestion G10 Greenback or clone but understand that these may be regarded as bright or crisp rather than warm. However in a closed back cab pushing then they can be warm with high volume lead playing.

Of course this is all subjective, but is it too much of a generalisation to state that a closed back cab may add up to 6db of bass and a brighter speaker may be needed for that application.

Tell me your what you think and what are the more important considerations when matching a speaker to a cab particularly for 10”  speaker for a clean / jazz / 90 rock / grunge etc (not ultra gain metal )

I have a Jensen P10R in my Fender Harvard 5F10.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

I have been using Eminence 1058s for quite a while..  they are really the best bang for the buck in 10" speaker land, and in PR's the sound great. If you prefer a do all speaker with warmth then this speaker is for you. Try one, you'll see.
And I had no idea the prices for them had jumped by $30 ..   wow..   what a world we live in.

Thanks for your replies…

Currently I have a Celestion VT-Junior. I haven’t tried either of those speakers P10R or  Emi 1058.

Celestion 10" 30W Greenback.

Various Weber 10" 20W to 30W alnico or ferrous magnet speakers
A bus stops at a bus station. A train stops at a train station. On my desk, I have a work station.

I agree with Sluckey and Tubeswell on the Jensen P10 and the Weber speakers, alnico magnet or ceramic.

I prefer the UK made Celestion G25 or 30 white label, can't remember which, they may have made both.

My all time favorite ten would be the blue label lower wattage (smaller size ceramic magnet) found in hundreds of solid state amps like the Princeton Chorus. I think they were made by CTS? 2 of these 10s in the Fender cabinet with a low watt tube amp is musical bliss IMO.

That 25W Celestion has a very low sensitivity. I've been using the 35W (G10L-35) in a combo with great result too. More open sounding, somewhat: less on the dark edge and more volume too.

My feeling is there is no such thing as a speaker suited to open cabs. These speakers were being used in closed back Marshall cabs and they do sound great in small combos too.

I played a Deluxe Reverb through a 2x10 open back cab once. It had a very nice Fendery sound.

I’m a fan of the Weber DT-10’s (Derek Trucks).

I just picked up a 10" Jensen Falcon.   It's a 40W speaker and I'm going to use it in an slightly oversize Champ cabinet sporting an AA764 build in a chassis from Noojwut in Thailand.
It's surely over spec'd for the little amp but the price was right. I would rather have a low wattage Weber alnico though.

I did a shootout with p10r and p10q. I prefer the p10Q for my needs though I really liked the P10R in my vibro king.

My 2x10 cab is convertible. Currently housing a Weber 10F150 ceramic, and a warehouse 10c/s. the warehouse is louder. works great with my brown and tweed fenders i’ve built.

also tried Emi Ragin Cajun, and emi copperhead. I didn’t love either, but I want to try the Legend.
