Stout Reverb Tone Stack
« on: May 03, 2022, 08:12:04 pm »
Evening Gents-I took a hiatus from amp building for a few years and recently came back to paradise (raising kids took me away from my favorite hobby). I bought a Stout Reverb Turret board and components from Doug for this build but he didn’t have a chassis so I sourced one elsewhere. Has anyone added TMB to this circuit and if so, did you just mount the tone caps directly on the pots as the board isn’t layed out for them? Also I would love to hear your thoughts on cathode bias vs grid bias and using 6v6’s vs EL-84’s.
Thanks in Advance

You can use a 3 lug terminal strip to mount parts for a TMB tone stack in front of the board.  I have also soldered a terminal strip on the back of a pot before to mount caps for a tone stack.

6V6 will sound different than an EL84.  I strongly prefer 6V6 over EL84's.   I prefer cathode biased also. Depending on your plate voltages you may be able to use 6K6 for about  7-8 watts OR 6V6's using cathode biased.  The EL84 is my least favorite tube of all that I've tried. I've never been able to get a smooth tone using them and I've always had some high end harshness with them.  Having said that, I've heard EL84 amps of others that I liked quite well.

Essentially you have said "I want to build a Stout Reverb but make it not a Stout Reverb".   :icon_biggrin:

With respect, Tubenit

Thanks for the reply, Tubenit! The stout sounds killer as it is but I wonder if it can get a little more frequency focused with a TMB. I also prefer 6V6’s over 84’s as I don’t like the high-end harshness of 84’s and the early breakup. I’ve yet to build a cathode bias amp so I may give it a try on this one. Appreciate the insight!

fender did this for the pa135 i have. makes sense in that application as for tone stacks would take up more board real estate than there's room for in the chassis
just saying there's even production precedence for this

A bus stops at a bus station. A train stops at a train station. On my desk, I have a work station.
