1974 Model A Sunn Speaker Choices?
« on: July 27, 2022, 04:29:59 pm »
When it comes to speakers i really don't know a lot about them. I need to find a pair of 12" speakers for the Sunn cab. I like Eminence speakers and i have pair of 1999 Eminence in a 212 cab that i use for my work. Any recommendations for a good bottom end and mid range? I know it's a crap shoot until you actually hear them. This amp has super cleans along with good distortion. The cleans of this amp are like and or better than what Fender is known for. That really surprised me. Almost like pinch harmonic clean. And the Mid Frequency Select can change all that so it has a lot of range in tone. I wonder about the Weber speakers. I only have experience with the 10" webers. ???

Celestion G12-65s (or '75s if you want a bit more bass) (or one of each type)
A bus stops at a bus station. A train stops at a train station. On my desk, I have a work station.

My Sunn Solarus 2x12 cab has a Celestion Heritage G12H (55Hz) on bottom and a Celestion Heritage G12H (75Hz) on top. I'm very pleased with that combination.

The pic of my Solarus cab shows the original Sunn alnico Transducers. You can see the aluminum voice coil dust covers peeking through the grill cloth. I still have those but they were played pretty hard before I got them. Sound a bit thin to me. Most likely need new cones. If interested in the Sunn speakers I can post some pics.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Sure i would like to see them. Would like to keep this amp as original as possible. I found the pic online.

Here are the pics of my two speakers...

They would be packed in those two celestion boxes. Then the two celestion boxes would be put inside the same heavy-duty shipping box that Avatar originally shipped the celestions to me a few years ago. IOW, good packing.

Dang! My transformer is 8 ohm. Wired parallel would give me 4 ohms. I think i should stay with 8 ohm. What do you think? 4 ohm would be maybe to much louder. Maybe getting them re-coned for 8 ohm would work. I used to re-cone my own speakers until the cost of the rebuild kit's cost almost as much as a new speaker.

Your OT has an 8Ω tap and also has a 4Ω tap. Plugging into the speaker jack connects to the 8Ω tap. Plugging into the ext speaker jack connects to the 4Ω tap. Study the schematic.

So, put two 8Ω speakers in the combo cab, wired in parallel, and plugged into the ext speaker jack. Perfect.

Your right about the 4 ohm tap. I am speaking about in terms of a 4 ohm speaker producing a slightly larger bottom end than an 8 ohm speaker. I want to stay in the 8 ohm range where it may be a little tighter. Less loose than 4 ohm. Message me with a price.

I put some 12" Sunn Transducer speakers in this today. Sounds good! Waiting on reverb tank to arrive.
