Mesa boogie dual rectifier output transformer
« on: July 01, 2023, 03:38:36 am »
How come mercury magnetics doesn't sell an output transformer replacement for just a normal 100w dual rectifier? Is there something I'm missing? any other recommendations for an OT that will work with 6l6 and el34 at 100w like a dual rec would?

My other gripe with mercury magnetics is the fact that they do not provide any specification sheets...

Ooops this is PT, sorry... You need OT. Still might be worth a call.

>>>>> Not sure if this is what you need... SKU for product shown is 561160, and in the schematic SKU is 562105. Might be worth a call?

Yes very annoyed with no specs especially considering the price. From what i gather the solo head transformer has the specs i need, but i will give them a call and get more info when the time comes.

I’ll probably get flogged for this. But I am not sure i’d buy a Mercury unless they were the only option. And even then not sure. Not that they are bad. They have come to be an overpriced favorite transformer upgrade by adding alot of metal to them. And in my opinion their transformers have their own characteristics instead of whatever ones they are replacing. So if you want a mercury transformer sound, then absolutely get a mercury. Otherwise i’d either call mesa for a replacement or ask another company like Soursound, Heyboer or Pacific Audio Magnetics to make one. And for a power transformer, why not Hammond?

+1 and they are not the only option. And they have competition -> Hammond as you stated, and Hammond is at least half price on comparable transformers. Upgrade? OK, well then give me specifications so I can make that determination. Otherwise I have to take their word for it, and I'm not. I was looking at their PT for a Matchless HotBox which only powers 2 12ax7's. They wanted $141.00 USD. Yikes! Plus no specs. No way, I'll find another way to supply power.

I in no way think they are bad. Alot overhyped. Pretty painted transformers with more metal and a big price tag to a musician with no electronics background is a brilliant business. Sell the placebo. And they are no doubt better than some of the cheap mass produced amp stock transformers. And they do put more into their development then just more metal and pretty paint. But they have created a formula that is successful. And you no doubt get that will all their transformers.

Do you need a general purpose 100W OT, or are you replacing an OT in a mesa boogie?

I'm not 100% , but don't all boogies run "simul-class" where 2 of the 4 output tubes run AB and 2 of the 4 run class A?

I'd venture a guess that boogies transformers are copywritten/patented due to the "simul-class" stuff.

These are some very good points, I guess what threw me off is the fact that with the dual rectifier all you need to do to go between EL34s and 6L6 is change the bias, would this configuration work with any 100W OT?

I definitely should probably go hammond.

This power transformer seems to have the correct specs If I use the ct winding to get 350V B+, would this be fine with a 100w amp?

https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Hammond-Manufacturing/1650TA?qs=gF4h2Znc3LCcbe2lhWgDIw%3D%3D
Hammond claims this will work 100w with x4 EL34 or 6L6, would this be a good choice?

You guys always know how to bring sanity to my builds haha.

On a similar note: The schematic calls for a 4H choke @90ohm 150DCr, would this be an appropriate substitute? https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Hammond-Manufacturing/194F?qs=js1dy8FNo8G3wiawALMYkQ%3D%3D

Did you mean to say "4H choke @90mA 150DCr"? If so, I suggest this...

A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

No. AFAIK that is a fairly recent thing.

(But I been around since Santana said "That thing boogies!" so I may be living in the past.)
