We got a new Thrift Shop in our area and I finally got around to visiting it yesterday. Pretty big space, well organized and a lot of stuff. I finally located the electronics section and went over everything and nothing stood out to me except a SS Radio Shack PA head that they had marked $2.50. How could you go wrong at that price? It took a IEC cord that was missing, so I couldn't test it. The shop keeper said, the pilot light did light up---So I picked it up if for nothing else, entertainment factor! When I got it home, put a IEC cord on it and hooked it up to a speaker(had 4,8,16 Ohm taps). Hooked a guitar up to it, turned it on. The pilot light came on but no sound. So I took the cover off and began to chop stick the circuit. After quite a while of prodding when I touched the ribbon cable plug in to main board there was life sprang up, but intermittent. So I unplugged the connection and DeoxITed the pins and plugged it back in, now continuous life!
I then started ditteling around with the controls and sounds to see what I got. Then got my ol DOD Delay out, hate to play through a dry amp! The tone controls different in that it has separate knobs 100Hz, 1kHz and 8kHz but works very effectively for guitar. Next I started messing with the Mic volumes and master Vol and to my amazement instead of getting super clean tone was getting more distorted tones but at the same time guitar friendly and the amp is a loud 40 watts.I finally figured out I could set the Mic Vol at about 2:00 and Mas Vol 8:30, I could get a good combination of cleans and distorted tone by just adjusting my guitar volume. Once I got it all going I played on it several hours just having a ball. I'm truly surprised that a SS Radio Shack PA is sounding & responding so well for guitar. You just never know what your going to run in to before the day is done
