Milkman Class D amp?
« on: April 04, 2024, 04:50:52 pm »
I curious to try experimenting with different preamp circuits into a Class D output section - it's a formula that seems to work pretty well for bass amps and might be a fun little project for guitar. Does anyone know what Class D power amp Milkman uses in their "The Amp" series of small form factor amps? Alternatively, anyone familiar with a decent off the shelf Class D output amp?

Also, any reason you couldn't use a rectified and lowered 50V bias tap from a standard tube power transformer (say a Hammond 290CX) to power the Class D amp? Any general concerns about interaction between the power amp and preamp section in an arrangement like that?

Not enough current.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Good point sluckey. Since posting I did a little more digging around and found this module which includes the power supply, so in theory you could have a regular power transformer for the preamp tubes and this unit both running directly from the AC mains. That unit seems to be what Darkglass is using in some of their bass amps.

I don’t know what Milkman uses but I know a lot of commercial bass amps use those Ice modules.

ICE Power seems the most common.  I've seen them in Fenders and GK bass amps.  They are easy to purchase on the open market.  Make sure you understand and follow all instructions on how the output is configured.

I have toyed with the idea of building an amp with a pentode preamp and class D power section.  You can buy 10 watt power amps on aliexpress for $5.
