Transformer Selection 6V6/5881 Princeton reverb build
« on: April 30, 2024, 12:40:08 pm »
Hi folks I'm planning on a Princeton Reverb (mostly aa1164) build that supports 6v6 and 5881 tubes. I plan to keep the amp fixed bias and make it adjustable. I'll make standard tweaks (deepening and slowing trem, mid control) and it will have a 12" Warehouse G12c. The goal is to keep the portability of a Princeton Reverb, but be as loud or louder than a Deluxe Reverb (cleans dont need to be crystal clean). I don't want to lug around something that's the weight of a Twin.

1. Will I be able to mount the following toroidal transformer on a mojo Princeton Reverb chassis and use it for this build? It has dual 6.3V windings and dual HT windings.
https://www.antekinc.com/as-1t300-100va-300v-transformer/

2. I may repurpose an OT from the VHT 12/20 rt amp, schem attached, but I'm unsure of the impedance ratio and wattage rating outside of the marketing. The amp comes stock with 6v6's and is cathode biased with 1k resistors and has switchable plate voltage (320V for 6v6/438V for 6L6). Should I use the VHT tranny or go with the following one from Weber? https://www.tedweber.com/w041318/

I have used the Antek toroidal transformers for a few projects, they seem to work well.

I think that the Mojotone chassis has a cut-out for the typical PR PT & you will need to make a blanking plate to cover that opening  before you can mount the Antek.

Also, do some Googling about mounting tordoidal transformers as there are some things to avoid so that you don't inadvertently create as external winding & short it out. I have used a plastic bolt to mount mine just to eliminate the issue, but that isn't really necessary. Just be aware of potential problems.

You didn't say, but from the PT specified (no 5V winding) you are planning to use SS rectification? Can't remember if Antek has any WITH 5V, but another thing to be aware of.

As far as your OT, you should be able to measure the windings to get you in the ballpark as far as numbers & with any luck, you may be able to use a different output tap to get close to the desired reflected impedance with 6L6s.

One other thing to keep in mind is that a 12" speaker BARELY fits in a PR cab. The speaker has to be offset all the way towards the input jack end to not interfere with the transformers. In fact,I am building one right now & did a mock-up before I made the baffle to make sure there was clearance, as I started with a blank chassis & could adjust transformer locations.

I will use ss rectification. Thank you for the helpful notes about fitting the speaker in the cab and mounting the transformer!
