Beginner amp tinkerer from Missouri, Heyo!
« on: January 30, 2026, 05:23:39 pm »
Hey guys!
My name is Dan. Just a guitar player / sound guy who likes dabbling in DIY over here. I've modded some pedals, basic stuff. Then wanted to build a guitar, which I did and it rocks (with the help of a few forums). I have 5 more half built ones in my garage that have been there uh... way too long haha. I'll get back to them ;) I've been on The Gear Page, TDPRI and MyLesPaul forums on and off for years. Old school "message boards" are the best places on the internet and I'm happy to be here!

My father in law recently gave me an old Gibson Mercury Medalist that he bought new in 1964(!) It's a cool looking beast but is non functioning. If those were valuable, I'd take it to a pro but they really are not lol. So I'm digging in to it and learning as much as I can about schematics and electronics and how tube amps work. I've had a lot of YouTube guidance from channels like Psionic Audio, Uncle Doug and Yeatzee Guitar mainly. I've also recently discovered Rob Robinette's Tube Amplifier Website. Lots of great info out there.

Anyway, I've got it pulled apart and some parts in the mail and I'll probably start a thread on it soon (in the proper subforum). Just wanted to introduce myself.

Welcome to the Hoffman Amps forum

There are many different boards on this forum for different topics.

The Tube Amp Building - Tweaks - Repairs board is where you can post amp questions.

That board is listed here.

Thanks,

Welcome, you named off all the right places (love Robinette's site). This forum is the best IMO and filled in a lot of stuff I really hadn't thought of. I'm just a guitar player too, but have unfortunately been playing less and building amps more . It's quite addicting. I started like you having to repair my vintage Fenders. With my 65 (perhaps late 64) princeton non-reverb, even though I repaired it myself (recapping and power cord), it brought a great price. Hope you have fun like I am with this hobby.
