How about the output of an AM FM radio?  Get some old throw away battery powered radio.  You'll have a real hard time hurting a scope with that.  Once you get a feel for it, poke around inside the circuit.  Tear it apart and put it back together.

The Tone Lizard offers his "Idiot's Guide to Oscilloscopes"

I also found some Oscilloscope Tutorials

Unfortunately, I haven't bought an oscilloscope yet so I don't know how useful these links are.  They seemed helpful to the unintiated (me).

We have proven once again no plan survives contact with the enemy, or in this case, with the amp.

For tube amps, it is helpful to review a schematic that includes AC test voltages, which will give you an idea of how to set the input voltage and what to expect for gain and insertion loss of various stages.

Modern Fender amps have this info on the schematic:  Blues and Pro Junior, Hotrod Deluxe and Deville, and the Red Knob Twin.

Paper-in-oil caps are cool!
