long overdue book
« on: September 18, 2008, 06:53:32 pm »
Lee Jackson (apparently not connected to jackson guitars) built amps/preamps in the 80's under his own company and for companies like ampeg.  To give you some idea, I've read he built amps for Steve Vai, George Lynch, Zakk Wylde, and other guitar big guns in the 80's. My 100 watter was made by his company; it has stratospheric gain levels right up there with mesa.

Anywho, he signed on to make an amp book ears ago, but for whatever reason, it still hasn't happened. The publisher recently mentioned that the book is back in production and the date on amazon.com (not that it means anything) is 15 october.

I have TUT 1&2...not sure how Lee Jackson's book (called "ultimate bench warrior") will stack up, but I've wanted to see what he'd share in it for years. He had sold dvd's of selected info but for more than the book is supposed to cost.

 Should be interesting.

I know he designs some pretty gainy stuff. I had a Jackson designed Crate Stealth with 4 6v6's and the gain channel on that was a monster.

I have 6 of his videos.  I bought them in a package deal on eBay.  I use them to remind myself what crap is.  Seriously, I've never owned more worthless videos in my life.  I put them right up there with Curt Mitchell's "In the style of.." series.

 ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, Curt has a few of my $$$'s too!  Interesting that none of his "style"'s remotely resembles the person listed on the package!

Jim

ps I also jammed on a Metaltronix head that had some great and varied tone - very nice amp.

I would rate it at a solid 3 on a scale of 20. Very little useful information, poorly documented, poorly written, poorly edited, poorly everything.

I too have to express my disappointment.  :-[ This book was very very confusing, poorly made and contained nothing really useful. There was something in the preface that "he didn't want to give everything ready so someone could copy it, just some ground to find more info on your own". After reading I just took this as an excuse for the fact that he didn't have to make a good book. Actually it's not even moderately good.. It's very awful... Going to try TUT-series next which seem to be far more professional and useful though they cost much more. I won't recommend Ultimate Bench Warrior to anyone. I am very very novice on tube-stuff and EVEN I found it very poorly made.  >:(

Cheers
Dark

I took a look at the sample pages on Amazon.  Boy those paragraphs on how to use greenlee punches and a heat gun are just invaluable. ;D ;D ;D ;D

The back cover says "..everything you need to know to work on amplifiers"  and all in 180 pages including the greenlee punch and heat gun pages. ;D ;D

What a joke.  Just another attempt by Mr. Jackson to make some dough for as little work as possible.  This guy is shameless.  I would never put out a product for sale of such low quality like that book and his videos.  Their quality is only good enough for free distribution on the net and even that could be categorized as a waste of folks time.

Well, glad I didn't get it..instead, I got 5 of Keven O'Conner's books and am happy with them. I am 6-% through the first one as it appeared easiest to read. They are pretty complete and although others have mentioned they are opinionated, I haven't found to much I could argue with so far. But, everyone has an opinion anyway and his seem to be derived from experience from his amp company. Commercial sources will find a lot more problems in the supply chain than small buyers will. And if he has done actual research on his stuff, it will likely work first time with minor tweaking. And he covers a lot of stuff I had been wondering about like master volumes, triode-pentode switches, and much more. When I start vol2, I am doing the math and taking math notes on it. I should have done it on Vol1 but I am reading it so slowly that I didn't want to try and remember it. And just a hint..if you have time to crap, you have time to read one sub heading without getting roids in the process. So any excuse except blind is not logical. I have read a foot of correspondence course and several thick books a little at a time. Of course after TBI, I am good to digest a few minutes of  tube at one time anyways...
Of course, Doug's stuff is cool too and I would read that first since it is not as complicated as Ultimate Tone. The experience on this forum has a whole lot of insight and answers also.
