Just Got Paid
« on: February 22, 2009, 08:22:09 am »
I'm a big fan of ZZ Top's take on the blues.  Back in the 80's my taste in music was different and I didn't really get turned on to them until Eliminator.  Ironically, I don't like those songs anymore and have become convinced that the old ZZ classics are where it's at and where it's been all along.  This one really shows Billy's prowess with a slide:

Notice Billy's "please excuse me, but it's my solo time" nudge to Dusty around 4:22.  That kills me!

Enjoy...

Good video.
I have loved ZZ since the first album on.

Don't agree about the elimintor era being any less than the early stuff, but to each his own.
I love the Elimintor album a bunch.

Awesome.  This is probably my Favorite ZZTop tune to listen to....but almost all their other tunes are nearly my favorites too.  ;)  Tush is my favorite to play...Tush just begs for 5 minute "G" blues penatonic solos, simple but always sounds awesome.

The overdrive guitar Tone on the original record of this is purely one of the tones that I judge all others by. His tone sounds great in this video too. I love how Billy acts guarded about the "secret" to his tone and tells people that he uses all this different gear from interview to interview and it's never the same answer twice.... He's definitely a guy whose Fingers are absolutely the tone no matter what gear he's plugged into. (so is everyone else, I guess, but even when he did effects laden stuff he as the player always comes through.)

Pretty true, although I did hear them a while back on a VH1 award show and live he was using some sort of higher gain marshally looking amp (not sure on the backline, not a close shot) that sounded like a jcm800 only buzzier, not good. Might have been a provided backline for the show that looks impressive I donno. Studio stuff though, yeah, great tones and I think most of it IS in his fingers, I saw that video of him showing some blues riffs with just a practice amp and he sounded amazing just doing that.

Dyna

I actually like this version better....

&feature=related ;D
You gotta at least check out the double bass, sub sonic vocals, and the shreadin' guitar!

I really like this tune ZZ did on the World Wide Texas Tour in 1976.  That show was a close second behind Deep Purple as the loudest fricken show I've ever heard.  This live shot was from 1976 with them doing Chevrolet.  This was his Les Paul and two 100watt Super Leads cracked wide open.  Man I love this tone!

I've got a DVD of the Top from 2008.  Billy and Dusty had stacks of Crate amps behind them.  There were actually cords plugged in so I am ass-u-me-ing that they were being used.  They sounded pretty darn good!  Pretty cool the way they had them stacked - three 4x12's on the outsides, two 4x12's in the middle, and one 4x12 on the insides.  Now that 3 cab stack was pretty high!  They had amps on top of the stacks and the tubes were glowing - pretty cool!

Man, they had so many great tunes.  My band used to do the whole B side of Fandango - Thunderbird, Jailhouse Rock, backdoor love affair, and my fav as a singer - Gotta Mellow Down!  Man those tunes were fun to do!  Brings back great memories....

I am a huge fan of Billy's playing
Doesn't matter what he plugs into, his fingers do the talking.

I have heard some amp sounds that did not thrill me, but I get over it.

The link is blocked on my work computer and my home computer is too slow  :'(

In the 70's I wore out a copy of Tres Ombres down to where there were no more groves in the record, completely smooth--honest Indian!  ::)  I once had a Guitar Player artical where Billy told the story behind each song, very interesting especially Master of Sparks. I saw them live at Shreveport La.
I really enjoyed  their performance but I have to say, they were the only Rock band I ever recall that hurt my ears where I had to stoop down behind the people in front of me to block the sound on some songs. I think I actually incurred some ear drum damage there. You take a Gibson Flying V & Pearly Gates and a thee story Reo Grand Amp and you got big sound waves)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Saw them in 1976 on the World Wide Texas Tour with the cactus, steer, and snake on stage.  It was general admission (the last one in St. Louis due to the damage), and we ran our butts off and got 8th row center.  It was so loud.  How loud you say?  Some clown several rows behind us threw a pack of firecrackers that went off about a foot and a half in front of us between me and my bass player buddy.  We did not hear a thing!  We saw the flashes and were being hit with paper, but not a peep to be heard.  Still not as bad as DP thou.

Saw Nugent years ago with his howling hollowbody that quite possibly might have been the loudest concert I've heard, nearly loud enough where your ears shut off for a moment.
