Sister Rosetta Tharpe
« on: March 22, 2009, 01:33:23 am »
This is one rocking sister let me tell ya. This is about 1960 the woman was about 45, had a stroke in 70 loss the use of her legs and died in 73 from another stroke. She was a favorite of many big names (including Little Richard who sang with her as a child and Johnny Cash). Sounds like a open tuning. Pretty cool little lead riff she pulls off, nice SG (which might have been one of the NEW les paul's before people shunned them badly from them changing them). Its hard to see because the choir steps up and blocks her amp, but it looks like she's playing a old gibson or perhaps a supro, but dig the funky distortion she gets. I know Gospel will make some people pass up the video, but I like all music so here it is, you be the judge:

Regards,

Dyna

Ps: I'm not sure how she tuned, its in C I believe, but I never seen anyone play a open C tuning, it almost sounds tuned down a bit too.

You've done it again and dug up another of my inspirations.  I'm a huge fan of hers and there's quite a few of her videos on youtube.  I think I first learned about her here on this forum... maybe from you.

Perhaps I think I may have posted this before, but everytime I watch it I'm like, dang this lady could throw down. Chasing the Devil off with her pick... :D Glad you liked it.
