OK, I admit that I know little to nothing about this guy. I've seen a couple of clips of him and it always seems like he's working to draw as much attention to himself as to his music. (if that makes sense?)  His theatrics and "costumes" kind of remind me of Michael Jackson but with a guitar.

However, I'm impressed with some of his creativity and he gets some rather remarkable tones from his guitar and amp.

Maybe everyone's familiar with this but it's new to me. I thought it was pretty interesting to listen to.

I think I like listening to it more than watching his "guitar faces" etcetera.  He is really talented, and that clip is more musical than other things of his I've heard.

Vai played with Frank Zappa early on IIRC.  Again, technically he's probably as good as or maybe a better guitar player than Frank was, but without soul/passion/humor/don't know what but something's missing for me. 

Your mileage will vary depending on your musical tastes.

It's still playing and I just popped over to see even sillier guitar faces ;)

I have that DVD of that live performance.

Strange, but that triple neck guitar thing he did was my least favorite part of that concert.

He split the show up into segments.

Later on in the show, they turned all the lights down.
The band then came out with laser gloves on and laser head gear.
Each finger on these gloves had it's own laser.

He anounced that this would be the heavy part of the show.
Then they cut loose with my favorite stuff.

I never was much of a Vai fan years ago until I spent some time watching him and getting to know him.

Everything he does, does not thril me, but he is a real genuine person, no ego.
Not a hair band guy with some sort of manufactuered persona.

I have a much better appreciation of him than I did years ago before I spent some time getting to know him.

His live DVD stuff is definately the place to start if you are not familiar with him.
The G3 Dvd's are cool and worth a watch
Netflix has them all
The Yngwie one is great, no matter how you feel about Yngwie, he was on is game that night

OK, cool ........ I'll see if I can find his DVD and check it out.  He's a fabulous player and very creative in his approach. The stage appearance doesn't steal away from his talent at all.

Netflix rents a ton of musical DVD's.

 I don't buy DVD's, I rent them on Netflix.
How I end up with my own copy is something I can't discuss here.
