Tube amp related Xmas gifts: Score or FAIL?
« on: December 25, 2009, 10:49:37 pm »
My Dad picked this old Kester up for me at a military surplus store on the cheap. It's marked:

    - 60 Sn (which I think implies 40 Pb)

    - .40 diameter

    - W.S.  Water Soluble???

    - QQ-S-571e. I think this is military grade solder, but that's all the info I could find.

So will this stuff give me the tone??? No, just kidding. But seriously, can I stick some leads to turrets with this stuff?

Anyone score (or fail) with a tube related gift from a non-tube relative?

Surely not .40 diameter? That's too fat for tin roofs!

It's fine solder. But in electronics it is very much more convenient to use flux-core solder. I'm not sure how you'd use that stuff.

You could get a little tin of flux and dip it before adding solder to joints. When I was a kid I used to use a little brush and lightly (or not so lightly) cover components in flux to compensate for my mediocre soldering skills. I managed to make things stick this way...

I've used similar solder without too many bad results. If things continue in this lead-free solder direction that roll is likely to become more valuable!

Thanks for the tip, my sis recommended the same. I was actually able to trade it for some 60/40, 282 flux, 58 core stuff. it's very fat - .09 or something. I figured I could use it for soldering to big terminals, pots (probably guitar only), or making test tools. Thanks again.
