Passion
« on: February 22, 2010, 03:38:55 pm »
This is an instrumental tune written by John Jorgenson of the Hellecasters
It's called Passion.
I love this tune, it's got a great melody

This is mix #2
Not sure how everything sits in this mix, my ears need a couple days rest before I go back to it.

Let me know how it sounds,
Thanks for any input

Cool beans!!!

Yet another drummer offered to lay down drum tracks to this tune
He did a great job, his drums sound excellent!
He also layed down an excellent bass track and so I used that also

I just finished re-mixing with Beatlebum's drums tracks and his bass track.
Now if I could get him to do my guitar parts I could just sit and drink beer for a hobby. Maybe play cards with a robot? :laughings:
I was going to do the bass track myself but Beatlebum's bass track is great and so there's no need for me to do that.

Here's beatlebum mix
I went back and re-did a bunch of my guitar tracks also.

I have all the mixes on this page here with credits to PoeticIntensity and Beatlebum for their excellent tracks

You can play them on this page without downloading them.

I knew I heard that song somewhere before, but I couldn't remember where until I read the "about" on your mixcraft page.  Sounds like it was fun to play.  The last "solo" part and the outro reminded me a lot of something you'd hear on a slow Satriani tune, a real performance, as opposed to someone just going through the motion of playing the right notes.  The tangy up-bends in that section keep it interesting.  Cool stuff again Doug!

Craig

Thanks for the input Craig.
Appreciate the feedback.

I do the bends to try and find a note that works.
Sometimes I do ok and sometiomes not.

One of these days I'll actually be able to pull off this kind of stuff a bit better.
But for now, I do what I do.

As always, your playing sounds spectacular!  Very very well done guitar work. I think sometimes the slower stuff is the most difficult to keep the emotion/passion going and you did an excellent job doing so.

The mix (maybe the drums?) doesn't sound quite right to me on this one, but I don't know enough about recording to offer any suggestions. I've always thought your recording techniques were an expression of excellence and art in themselves.

You sure take on some difficult pieces to play and pull them off well.

Being a fan of the Hellecasters, I'm impressed.

Still using the same recording setup on this one or was the opening reverb actually one of your amps?

With respect, Jeff

Thanks Jeff,
The opening thing was my Ibanez set to single coil neck.
The amp was guitar rig as usual

I think I used an amp and cabinet that was a Laney and then I added a tube reverb effect to the amp.
I don't know which mic was used on that preset.
Can't remember exactly, there are so many amps, cabinets, mics and effects in guitar rig.

You are right about the slower stuff.
It's way harder IMO to play something that fits.

You can blow over the faster stuff and something is bound to fit if you play enough notes.

I tell you what, the dynamics of your playing thru guitar rig are reaaallly close to the dynamics of a "real" tube amp. I'm not sure I could tell from your recordings when you'd be playing thru an amp or guitar rig. Of course, I know some of the dynamics are connected to your playing ability for sure.

Yeah, the slower stuff is far more challenging and revealing of the emotion in one's playing, IMO.

Regarding the mix, I can't remember but maybe one or two occasions where I haven't had to go back and remix the "final" version.

yeah, same here.

BTW, Jeff,
I looked at guitar rig to see what setup I used for that intro.

It was a High White, which is a Hiwatt.
You can't use the name Hiwatt so it's High White.

Some of the amp names in Guitar Rig are amusing
An Orange amp is a Citrus
A Twin reverb is a Twang Reverb
Plexi is just Plex
JCM800 is a Lead 800
A JMP is a Jump
A Dual rectifier is a Gratifier
AC30 is AC box
A 5f6a bassman is a Tweedman
A Tweed Deluxe is Tweed delight
A roland jazz chorus amp is a Jazz amp
And there are other amps

The 50+ effects and modifiers names are the same thing
Similar enough so that you kno what it is, without using the real name

Ah ha, so the names of the "real" amps are very cleverly disguised. Hmmmm?

Hey Doug,
Cool tune!  I've never heard the original, but listening to your version these are my thoughts...  I think you should bring up the background guitar playing the harmony in the beginning.  I am thinking maybe a Boston type of layering?  Again, I've never heard the original so that may destroy the whole song!  Oh, and by the way, if it sounds like crap when you try this - it was 'Nit's idea!  Also, are you using the wang bar for your vibrato?  How about substitute a nice slow finger vibrato on the melody?  Again, Jeff's idea if it does not sound right...  Oh, and one more thing that "I" think would sound cool.  Can you crank up your monitors to a nice STAGE volume?  THere were a couple of runs that kind of petered out that would have sounded cool with a little feedback induced sustain!  Remember, wattage reins supreme!  Please note before anyone gets the wrong idea here:  I think your playing is awesome!

Thanks for the suggestions.

I use both finger and bar vibrato.
Depends on the situation and the finger that is available.

I usually do finger vibrato with my 2nd and 3rd fingers
For some reason, My index finger will not do vibrato.
And I don't even attempt vibrato with my pinky

I am using all 4 fingers to do the runs and so I can't be switching to a different finger to get a finger vibrato.
The runs require that each of the four fingers be in place without shifting positions.

Can't do feedback because I don't play that loud.
I play back the mix over one sound system and play through a different one.
I have to be able to hear the mix playback.
My playing at loud volume level days are long gone.

I can't stand to play loud anymore.
If I was playing outdoors on a big rig, I could get into it I suppose.

You know, that's interesting!  I could never do the "traditional" index finger wrist vibrato without sounding like the spastic 60's vibrato everyone used to do back then.  So to compensate I learned to just move my finger without using my wrist.  I have very long fingers, but not overly strong or hammy hands, which is also why I use my thumb a lot.  That technique got me by.  Then one day back in the 80's I was playing along to a Trower song and bang - there it was!  I've been able to do it ever since.  And believe me, I practiced for hours back in the 70's to slow it down - no way, it was like my wrist was on crack!

I totally understand your dislike for playing loud.  I find myself saying "What?" an alarming number of times lately.  Yeah, big loud amps...what a waste....

I should say that I use the index finger for vibrato sometimes, but mainly on the big E string.

I mix it up between fingers and the bar when it comes to vibrato
Each one has it's own vibe and both are cool.

I have been playing Strats and guitars with bars for so long that the vibrato bar is part of my right hand.

Beck is a master at using the bar to make all sorts of rude noises
Hendrix and Beck are the ones that made me get rid of my SG and learn to play a Strat.
I remember way back when how hard a Strat was to play compared to my SG.
Seemed like I had to start from scratch again after getting a Strat.

Now I hardly touch my Strats.
I am so used to this Ibanez and it does it all, plus it stays in tune.

Yeah Beck is coming to town at the end of April and I am going!  I can not wait - master of the wang!  He will be performing at the Fox THeater.  An unbelievably beautiful theater built in 1929 with almost perfect acoustics.  They filmed Chuck Berry's Hail Hail Rock and Roll there (I was there! All day and all night.....for 20 flippen songs...).  Check out the photo pages:   http://www.fabulousfox.com/photo_gallery.aspx

Cool beans!!!

A real live drummer on the Home recording forum heard my mix and asked to do a real drum track.
I just did a quick mix here with his real drum track.

You can download it here
http://www.el34world.com/Misc/Music/files/PassionDrums.mp3

or play it on this page here
http://www.el34world.com/Misc/Music/xspf_player_slim.swf?song_url=http://www.el34world.com/Misc/Music/files/PassionDrums.mp3

I still have to change a few things, like the bass track and re-do some of my lead stuff.

Doug,,,Like it with real drums even more!

As far as getting feedback at low volumes, the amp I built with VVR is THE ticket to getting loud amp sounds at quiet volumes.  In fact, it's downright hard to control if I'm sitting in the right proximity to it.  AND I can hear what's going on in the headphones much better than with a loud amp blaring away.  You might be able to get your Rig to feedback through the monitors, but I would assume you'd have to crank them up pretty dang loud to get a lot of interaction with the guitar.

Regards,
Craig

I can get feedback if I play loud.

I can't stand to use headphones when recording.
What I do is play back the mix on a small 35 watt receiver and two speakers.
Then I play Guitar rig through a 100 watt receiver and two massive 18 sub speakers.

I have two sound cards in my computer that let me do that.
I play back on one and record the guitar rig sound card

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I have to do a couple other things to the tune when I get some time.
