groovy jam...
« on: March 09, 2010, 11:49:20 pm »
I am working on the initial setup of some recording equipment I own.  Step by step starting with the drums which is why there is no toms on the kit because I had them off for tuning.  I came across this funky electric piano loop in logic and set it loop so I could jam on the drums to it.  I then played the drums in another room and tried to listen for latency or any problems while playing.  I was really at this point just setting mic levels.  On the drums I have a shure beta 52 on kick, 57 on the snare, akg c1000 on left overhead and audio technica 2020 on the right overhead.  The kick and snare preamps are apogee ensemble and the overheads are Neve clones (N72's) that I built, into the apogee converters. The bass is a 57' Precision reissue DI'd into the apogee converter.  The guitar is my american strat through my red deluxe 5e3, recorded using a 57 close up, about 2" away, off centre of the dust cap.  No EQ or processing at all and no edits...yet.

I know I am all over the place with my playing, drums and guitars but I am just getting a feel for these new preamps and recording stuff again.

I can't listen, your page wants to install quicktime.

I uninstalled quicktime because it is so invasive.

Can you make .mp3's or windows media files?

What makes quicktime so invasive?  I've always found the app to be very useful.

I am trying to figure out a way to make window's users happy...hopefully soon I will figure out a way to have an mp3 player on my website that will work for any computer.  I have been trying to add a flash player like you describe but I cannot get it to work yet.

Ever look at the windows services that start up automatically when you have quicktime installed?

If you look at your sytem startup stuff, quicktime always tries to run it's own service called quicktime task
Even you stop that service from starting up automatically, it will be there again the next time you play something in quicktime

Quicktime always tries to automatically play certain file types even though I do not authorize it to play those file types
It will try and play .mp3's even though I have winamp set up to play .mp3's

Same with other apple software.
I have I-tunes installed becuase I buy music, but it starts and Ipod service.
I don't have an Ipod and I don't want that service running all the time.

I hate invasive programs that do not ask for permission.

The only thing you quicktime for is to play a .mov file
What other files would it be needed for?

I use quicktime to play .mov files and .mp3 files.  It just works seamlessly for me but I am an apple guy.

When I bounce a stereo track down, I make a .wav (full rez) and an mp3 (compressed) version.  I'd rather post an mp3 to my website because it does not eat up as much bandwidth.  When I am adding the mp3 to my webpage, it automatically converts it to a quicktime movie player for some reason.  It's very easy to create and works great if the end user/listener has quicktime installed but there are some out there that either don't like quicktime or don't want to take a minute to install it just to listen to something.

I want to make listening to my mp3's as easy as possible.  I know I sometimes don't bother with clicking on links and downloading just to preview someone's music.  It's a PITA sometimes.

I am looking into a solution now.

As for quicktime running a task on startup...is it possible to go into quicktime preferences and just tell it to not run at startup?  Or you should be able to select which program to use as your default mp3 player?  This should be possible in the control panel under audio or something.

Yes, I have been trying to figure out how to get that to work with my site but have had no luck yet.

I have altered mine so much that I can't remember how to set up a stock player.
I created a perl script that counts the song plays and then starts the player.

Ok, I downloaded the player and tried to set it up from scratch
I just followed the instructions on the site, but the instructions show how to set up a player with a playlist.
I will mess around with it some more later to figure out how to make a player just play one song
You only need 3 files, see the screen shot

The playlist files contents are shown and the .htm page I set up contents are shown
Here's the link to the test page
http://www.el34world.com/Misc/Music/TestPlayer/TestPlayer.htm

This is the screen shot that shows the files in a folder and what the files contain

The google player works great

The quicktime player does not work.
I get a pop up that wants to install a quicktime add-on, which I said no to
Of course I said no to the quick time add on.

Yes to all......."tone-wise", everything sounds really good to me!

I really want to start recording some stuff. Maybe after I finish the new amp, I'll find time.

OK, good.  I'm glad this works.  I kinda like the google player.

Finding time is the key for me...recording can become time consuming.

You mention "tone-wise", it sounds good...is there something you hear otherwise?

Oh, no.....I was just referring to what you had already commented about, that it was a quick scratch/test type track & that you didn't really try to get all the instruments timed together perfectly.
The playing, tone, recording quality, everything was excellent!

I wish I could play drums. My drummer is one of the best I have ever heard, but I don't want to intrude on his precious time for my experimentation.
I'm sure I'll be able to find some good drum tracks once I get serious about doing the recordings & do some research......

Hey, I liked that!  I thought the recording sounded pretty good even on my laptop speakers.

Please post some more stuff. I enjoy hearing what others are doing.

And DaGeezer .................... you are waaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy overdue in posting something of your own playing and amp tone.  We're deducting 2 and a half  point a wk until you get this resolved with a posted tuned. All those points you've accumulated designing wonderful amps will be obliterated if this lingers too much longer.

With respect, Tubenit
