The Flame King propane refill adapter is pretty nice because it keeps the 1 pound tank upright as you fill them
And it comes with a nice stand for the 20 pound propane tank you will use to refill the 1 pound tanks
But there is a catch
You can only refill Flame King 1 pound tanks because there is a small plastic half round piece that will not allow you to screw on a Coleman 1 pound tank
I modded my Flame King adapter so that I could refill Coleman 1 pound tanks also
The instructions on how to do this this are down below
-
This is what the Flame kit looks like
It comes with these items
A stand that you can set a 20 pound propane tank on
The refill adapter
A refillable 1 pound tank
You do not get the 20 pound propane tank shown in the image above
Note that the stand can be assembled with just 4 wing nuts
So it is possible to unassembled it and stash the stand in an RV without taking up a bunch of space

Here's a close up of the white plastic half round piece you will be removing
It is part of a white plastic washer that is under the brown rubber seal
See the instructions below on how to remove this half round piece.

I numbered the pieces in the photo so you can follow along easily
Take a 3/8 inch socket or wrench and remove the brass filler tube (#4)
There is a brass washer under the filler tube (#3)
Then you can pull out the rubber seal (#2) and white washer (#1)
The half round plastic piece is part of the white plastic washer

Take some flush cut nippers and nip off the half round plastic piece
There will probably still be a nub left since it is just about impossible to trim off that half round piece so it is completely flush with the surface of the washer
You must remove all of the half round plastic piece
I used a Dremel tool to remove the last bit of nub
The surface of the washer must be completely flat where the half round piece once was
The white plastic washer is not brittle, but it is not soft either
So trimming it off with a knife may not work very well

To assemble the filler
Insert the plastic washer (#1)
Then insert the rubber seal (#2)
Then insert the brass washer (#3)
Then screw in the filler tube (#4)
Make sure you keep the rubber seal centered as you tighten down the filler tube
The rubber seal can drift side to side a bit because the hole in the seal is larger than the threads in the filler tube

So here it is after it has been assembled
You can re-use the rubber washer or install a new one if you have one
I found that the original rubber washer did not leak at all with the half round piece missing
Just make sure you get the rubber seal centered properly
So now you can fill up Coleman 1 pound tanks
See my video below on YouTube on how I fill 1 pound propane tanks

I also included info on all the device I have that use 1 pound tanks
