Hoffman 6 v 6 Plexi Combo
« on: December 09, 2016, 11:09:01 pm »
Hey guys,

I wanted to share some photos of my Hoffman 18 Watt 6 v 6 Build.  I am close to being complete with just a little noise in the PI section.  Interesting twist to get it t work as a combo but it fits well.

Very loud with great tone, almost too loud for home use.  I haven't let it breathe yet, I will hook up my Power Station and let it rip later.

The next experiment will be to modify the rectifier to a tube rectifier to see how that reacts and feels.

BV

Looks Great!  Did you do the cabinet(s) yourself, or did you purchase those already built/skinned ?    Clean looking work, thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Those are the Mojotone Blues Junior Cabinets.  I have another blank chassis that fits that case so I am contemplating the next amp project.

Very nice work!  :bravo1:

I have another blank chassis that fits that case.....

What is the length of that chassis? (What does that cab measure between the 2 side back panel cleats?)

I thought the combo and extension cab looked cool so I had three chassis made to fit.  The dimensions are listed on the photo.  I had a cat in Canada make the chassis for me, I cannot find his name or card but it is around here.  If you are interested in the chassis I am not married to it.  The extension cab became a custom project for Mojotone and it cost me about $400, I have a closed back and open back panel.  I also have the same extension cabinet in Tweed if you are interested.

I think I am going to work on a head format for the next project, which I think might be an 8 Watt Mini Bassman.

Nice work! Chassis looks like Seaside Chassis, I've gotten a few from him myself.

Bingo!

We are a sick bunch when we recognize chassis work!  He was going to retire then he wondered what he was going to do, so I think he is still cranking.

Last I heard, yes. I had actually written to him, and Brian at Dirty Dawg for advice as I was thinking about making some chassis on the side. They both gave me excellent advice, really good fellows. Dirty Dawg stopped when his shed and equipment burned, and I think he really enjoyed getting his spare time back. haha Seaside (I forget his name) is on making 12 ga. and heavier chassis now, for the big stuff. Or at least that was his plan a year or so ago.

Update on the 6 v 6 Plexi.

I separated some of the wires underneath the board and I was able to tame any interference noise.  The amp runs quiet but it is a beast.

I was worried about it being too loud, it's perfect for performing.

I recorded a colleague last night using the amp.  Most of the time he is running straight into the amp.

I am using a Dr. Z 12" speaker by Eminence.

I am recording right on top of the amp and behind the mix, I wanted to hear the amp!

Sounds good

Hoffman 6 v 6 Plexi Combo EQ By Pass
« Reply #11 on: December 24, 2016, 11:39:39 pm »
The 6 v 6 Plexi is working very nicely.

We have found the tone and performance to be fantastic.

I have this question for this circuit as well as the Stout that is being assembled:

1. I really like the EQ by Pass Pedal toggle that I have on a couple of Dr. Z Amps.  Are these circuits, the Hoffman Circuits,  set up that I can by-pass the TMB stack if I cut in a foot pedal switch and essentially close down the circuit quietly and give a boost to the output?

It's not a necessity, we all have a boost pedal, but it is a really cool function when the tone is so nice coming from the amp and that little boost just cuts through enough to make your statement.

Thanks,

BV

You can break the ground on the mid pot for a boost. Use a shielded cable for a footswitch.

This is a maiden voyage from my new Sony AX 53 Video Camera

We are running straight into the amp.  I am just using the on board microphone which sounds pretty good.

The amp seems to get better!!
