5E3 blowing a speaker?
« on: January 22, 2013, 09:32:07 pm »
Every have a 5E3 blow a speaker up?

I am almost sure the "5E3 from hell" I have, just did.
It's a terrible cracking sound at high volumes.

Tried everything.
Thought it was the baffle, cabinet, vibrations, etc. and then finally just took the speaker out and put it on the floor....still crackles.

Nothing on the voltages side look out of the ordinary.Like 360 to 400VDC on the plates.(depending on rectifier tube.
PT is 150mA/320-0-320.
OT is 8k/8 ohm for a 5E3.
Speaker is......was a BBQ Sig 12 @ 25 watts.

A Vintage 30 has no problems.

Should I get a 50 watt speaker or something?
What speakers do you guys use in a 5E3 build?

I have a Jensen P12N reissue in mine.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

I don't know what a BBQ is? But it wouldn't be unheard of for a speaker to have a weak spot in it from manufacture and go puuf when the right note or notes hit it just right (wrong). You shouldn't be worried about putting another 25 watt speaker in the amp IMO.

BBQ? WTF is that? Maybe it likes to sizzle with a name like that. :l2:

I use Jensen P12Q's or R's or N's or the ceramic versions.

I have read that if you play with the amp cranked and use a lot of distortion you should use a speaker that is double the wattage of the amp.

Wow!
I didn't know that.
That's what blew up.
Must have gotten a dud.

Likely won't be using them anymore.
Maybe I'll go with Jensen.

I don't think he's saying all of Webers speakers are from China?

No,just the signature series are from China.Use your noggin and figure out how they can sell a 12" speaker for 45.00 and make any money at all.
Weber's baskets and magnets all likely come from China and the vintage series get American cones and voice coils put in them. The Vintage series and everything else is awesome, just the signature series is not always great. But I have used some in the past and they worked just fine,so it's not a slight against Weber in any way.Just clarifying a couple of things.

I have a Jensen 12", 100 watts Blackbird in mine.

I have stopped being surprised at the guitar player who spends $3,000 on the latest boutique amplifier, and plugs in his Mexican Stratocaster strung with light gauge strings through a Big Muff Pi fuzz pedal.
