Need help to build a Leslie

  My son and I need to build a Leslie 122 amp.  Any suggestions on what power trans, output trans and choke to use?  There is the Leslie schematic on the web but not a lot of info about the transformers used.  I suspect the output is a 40 watt because that's the wattage given.  Thanks for your suggestions

Is this for an Organ...it will have an amp.?

I just plan to copy the Leslie 122 amp.  I'm planning to put it in a 122 cabinet that's missing it's amp.  We want to make it a double duty, hooking it to our Hammond M101 and running a guitar into it for effects.  This all hinges on the possibility we pick up this Leslie122 without it's amp.  I realize we could use just about any of our guitar amps to drive this cabinet but I'd like to build a original type amp for it if possible.  Lots of organ replacement companies sell this replacement amp for around 700.00 which is a fair price but I really rather do a scratch build if possible.

I do not know how your M101 is configured. The other guys on this Forum have A LOT more knowledge than myself.
But.....usually the Organ had the preamp, and the Leslie had the power amp.
The Organ usually used a 7-12 pin connector cable.
So you will have to consider those 2 interfaces...Guitar and Organ gettiong into the Leslie.
I guess you could use the Preamp Out of your guitar amp, and build a separate 1/4" Jack/Connector in conjunction with the Organ cable. Impedance concerns, etc.
Anyway.....I will let the smart guys take it from here.

It only took my bad old memory 1 week but I just remembered a transformer co by the name of Classictone sold through Triode Electronics that has Leslie 40 watt output, power and a choke copy.  I've purchased everything in the past from Hoffman so I couldn't remember where I'd seen other transformers.  I'll let you know how this project unfolds as it goes forward or stumbles.  Thanks, Brent

Yes, that's right. They make very good iron sets for amps. I've read where guys say the regulator tube in those amps circuit makes them very smooth sounding for Hammond organs. You'd have to A/B the Leslie amp with another guitar amp into the Leslie cab with your guitar to see which you like the sound of better.

Our host Doug has very good iron sets in his online store too. You could make a great ~40w 2x6L6 amp like a Fender Super Reverb or something like it that would sound great through the Leslie.

And J Rindt is right too. Your going to need a preamp.

Leslie used to make a preamp for guitar players to plug into that also had the correct cable to go from the pre to the Leslie amp. So you didn't have to mod anything. They look like a big guitar floor pedal.

I think there were 2 different models because of the connector cable, different # of pins?

Their pretty pricy now but if you can build the Leslie amp then you surly could build the Leslie pre - or - build your own pre for/to your tastes/needs.

I'm sure the schematic for the pre's are on line somewhere.

If it were me, I would keep checking out fleabay for one.  I've seen them run from $100-200 depending on condition.  I think you would have a hard time finding even iron for that.  Recap, retube, and replace as needed and you are ready to go with the right connectors and everything.  It can still be a nice project for you and your son.  Does your M have a Leslie connector kit?

Don't overlook looking locally on Craigslist for a Leslie, as well. Especially if you can truck it easily. It is perhaps true that you may not find a model 122 unless you also have a B-3 or A-100 organ and such models aren't quite so likely to be dumped for cheap, but it's certainly free to check.

Here is one on the bay. Needs rebuild but the iron is most likely good. May go cheap due to condition. Good starting point.
I have seen them on here before for probably less than you can build one.
