Danelectro MIK "59" Baritone
« on: August 14, 2015, 12:04:35 am »
Well without really looking for it I managed to find my Grail Tone.

Went to GC after the local music stores didn't have an SG type guitar (of half decent quality anyway), and as I perused their wall I saw a Danelectro Baritone with a tacky sparkle finish.
I always wanted to try a bari & it sounded pretty good thru their DRRI so, irresponsible impulse buy! Not a well balanced guitar, body is too light but I can rig something up.

When I got it home I found out how cheesily built it was. Plywood with mostly hollow body. Then thru the Vibrochamp it did not sound too lively.

But wait. The Reverberocket 2 and my Hoffman VV seem to speak its language, this thing is like nothing I've ever played! Sustain till Tuesday, sweet Tele-like chime, nice tone, I can't seem to put it down!

Several factors spring to mind, that probably contribute to the experience. Aside from the bigger gauge & longer strings, the essentially hollow body must be a part of it, and series lipstick pickups make for a Telecaster tone on steroids if that makes any sense. The bridge pup sounds great on its own; the neck, not so much, but passable.

I just thought you cats would like to know.

Still dialing in the strings; the ones from the GC were a bit too light (11-60) though they felt good, and the only bari strings at the local music store were Ernie Ball 13-72, a bit too thick. Hopefully, the Elixir 12-68 bari strings I ordered will be just right.

Okay, the D'Addario XL 13-62 set is the ticket. Your results may vary.

Cool!   :icon_biggrin:

I've wanted a bari guitar for a while. I've got a # of C&W cd's that have bari parts on them and I like the sound they add.
