Question about VVR's
« on: February 16, 2020, 10:54:43 am »
I have found a few different types of VVR's. So is it best to scale the entire amp or one section verses the other? Entire pre-amp or power amp? One I have found shows scaling the G2 grids only of a power pentode. Which way would be best? Would a EL84 be a good candidate for such a device? Or just go with a master volume in the power amp, and then which location is best for that? I am wanting a good clean to mean big box sound, that at times will have to be low and quiet, and there will be times when it will not be loud enough.  Or it that the centennial (op of Millennial) in me coming out,  do I just want to much, as always. See, I grew up around "GUNS" sorry for the four letter word there. I know that there is now more social acceptance to say you like porno over guns, BUT I was taught to use what you have, learn to use the one thing you have rather than one for this and another for that. Hunt with the one gun you got. I want to hunt Rabbits with a Bear gun, so i will need a low power shell every now and then, see?.
Note to self: Do not Tic-off the Dentist before needed work, And do not Tic-off the Rectial surgen before needed surgery. Makes for Two V-bad weeks.

You need another amp. Then another. Then another. Then another....
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Hey ahhh, I have this friend so you know, I am kind of asking for him.  You see, he likes guns AND porn.  Is that a bad thing?

Anyway, it sounds like you might be interested in this thread:

after I learn't about guns, I wanted - a Boomer that wants   :think1:
the folk that taught me about guns were wise 'ol guys, so when I wanted they simply replied; "sh*t in one hand, want in the other, let us know which fills up 1st"  :icon_biggrin:
my kids learn't the same valuable lesson
Went Class C for efficiency

Look up London Power web site, lots of power scaling info on there.

You can do just screens, but most times they do the whole power tube, plate and screens. Next you have to decide if you want to also power scale the PI with the power tubes.

If you leave the preamp alone, then you can retain the preamp tone and just scale down the output section, with/without PI.

If you don't scale the PI, then you will most likely need a MV so as not to massively overdrive the output tubes.

Kevin also has an add on for keeping the preamp B+ the same, dcv clamp. As you turn down the power section B+ the PT will become more and more unloaded, and preamp B+ will rise, changing the preamp tone. The dcv clamp stops that from happening.

Depends on how much volume reduction you want/need and how good your ears are.

Too me, it doesn't make much sense to take a 40w or 50w tube amp and power scale it down to 5w's.

It makes much more sense to me to have an amp power scaled to cut the volume down enough at a gig so you don't blow the people out of the room. Or scale down a 15w or 20w amp to play at home.   :think1:
