Suppliers (as of 2021)
« on: February 23, 2021, 12:11:04 pm »
I searched but haven't seen a recent post.   So I wanted to get a current snapshot of everyone's favorite parts supplier.

I love ordering from Doug, but he does not carry everything.   Up until recently, I have been using Antique supply for most everything else (tubesandmore.com).  But the last few months have left me disappointed with their service.  Hopefully this is just a fluke.

This is my usual list (in order of preference):
  • Doug (resistors/caps/wiring.  Next state over, so shipping is fairly quick)
  • Antique Electronic Supply (most everything else, usually decent shipping times)
  • TubeDepot (usually more expensive and longer shipping times)
  • Mojotone  (usually more expensive and limited items)
  • Amplifiedparts (usually free shipping but slow, limited items)
  • Mouser/Digikey (Okay for cheap items, but not usually worth shipping costs.  Seems to be less desirable vendors like IC etc)

Does anyone have other suppliers to add to this?

Also, anyone in Nashville know of a local store that carries passive components like pots, resistors and caps?  It's a long shot, but man, half the cost of building amps seems to come from shipping.  Especially hard when shipping more than the components.

First off, I don't think you should judge any company by its performance over the past few months...lots of external influences affecting day to day operations of a lot of the bigger suppliers.
Secondly, I wish MORE retail places would charge actual shipping costs...which is what I have to pay when I place orders with suppliers.  Shipping fees and supplies are not cheap!

I've been using the wholesale arm of Antique Radio Supply for years, with zero complaints.  For the first time ever, they sent me the wrong brand tubes last Friday.  I called them Monday and the correct part was out the door immediately, and within minutes I also had a return label emailed to me so I could ship the wrong parts back.
I use Digikey quite a bit as well.  Their shipping is very reasonable...you can select USPS First Class for small part orders.  I'm in Minnesota, so I'll often get Digikey orders the day after I placed it.
The only "supplier" I'd add to your list is Ebay.  There are times when I can only find an obscure part there, and usually the prices are good and the shipping is fast.

I've been using the wholesale arm of Antique Radio Supply for years, with zero complaints.  For the first time ever, they sent me the wrong brand tubes last Friday.  I called them Monday and the correct part was out the door immediately, and within minutes I also had a return label emailed to me so I could ship the wrong parts back..

Not sure about that "First off" statement.  I can and will continue to judge businesses on performance versus how other companies in the same market perform... even in these times.  I do not feel bad for this.  That's what we do as consumers and how we keep companies competitive.  We all do this.   That being said, I totally empathize with the ongoing obstacles from covid to weather to supply chain issues that impact almost every business' performance.  I am not someone who gets upset by delays or mix-ups unless it has not been communicated well.  It is the customer service that I was not impressed with and I should have led with that.  Customer service is one way to mitigate performance issues when they arise.

Your experience with Antique Electronic Supply as wholesale customer is different than my experience a retail customer.   I had to purchase my own postage and wait two weeks after they received my return before the replacement was even labeled for shipment.  It would have been worse if I hadn't kept asking on the status.  So the actual total time from when I received the bad items to the time I received replacement was about 1 month.  There are more details that I won't go into here.

My client wasn't happy he had to wait either.  He doesn't care about the issues I had with this supplier.  However, I mitigated his frustration by communicating often and going the extra mile (he got the option of a custom unfinished cab at cost out of the deal).

Like I said, I hope this customer service experience was just a fluke as I do like them.  However, this experience has for sure prompted me to look at other possible alternatives.

Hoping I haven't driven anyone crazy driving my point home.

The only "supplier" I'd add to your list is Ebay.  There are times when I can only find an obscure part there, and usually the prices are good and the shipping is fast.
Good point!  I do use ebay and not always for just NOS tubes.

Interesting.   I knew Antique Electronic Supply and CE Dist were, but thought Amplified Parts was different (even tho same town of Tempe AZ)

Here's a few
...
Hayseed Hamfest - https://hayseedhamfest.com/  <--- USA, reproduction can caps

Whoa!  They have some nice looking caps.   Especially the 5-10-20 cap if you want a direct replacement for Silvertone 1482.  I looked for one of these for years.  Not sure of the fit is exact, but the capacitance is.

Antique Electronic Supply = Amplified Parts = CE Distribution = Apex Tube Matching.  It's all different names for the same company.

Also, anyone in Nashville know of a local store that carries passive components like pots, resistors and caps?  It's a long shot, but man, half the cost of building amps seems to come from shipping.  ...

There used to be an electronics wholesaler somewhere in the shadow of I-40, in the general area when Division St runs from Music Row out to "The Gulch" and Pietown.  But looking at a map, I'm guessing a lot of that area has been re-developed and the place is probably not there any more.  Then again, I haven't been there in over 20 years so I suppose a lot has changed.

Interesting.   I can understand wholesale and retail and even a separate company for tube matching, but I wonder what niche Amplified Parts fills.  I think I've order from them, but thru other retailers like Amazon, Ebay and Reverb because of free shipping.   Maybe that is what niche they fill.

Probably did change a lot.  I don't spend much time in downtown and I have only been here ~6 years.   But it seems like this whole metro area is really changing.  The growth here is crazy and as you can imagine 24 is worse than ever :)

I only see Graybar around that i40/division area.   Over in by the airport I see Bluff City Electronics.  I might give them a whirl, but looks like I would still need to order ahead.

I assume the "World's Largest Adult Bookstore" prominently visible from I-40W leaving the airport area & heading towards downtown is gone.  The place I'm thinking of used to be close to that.

They had vacuum tubes in the late-90s, but most were Russian tubes with forged RCA/etc logos & false country of origin markings.

For 30 years or more, AES positioned themselves as the place to go get tube radio parts.  Guitar amp stuff entered the picture over 10-15 years.

It's very easy to adopt a completely new image by getting a new name and modifying the appearance of your website.  But it's all the same stuff, listed in the same way, sold/shipped from the same place.

A few Australian places.

Electronic Valve and Tube Company https://www.evatco.com.au/ No storefront, so even though I’m in the same city and within 20 minutes drive I still need to pay for shipping…  And often parts are still cheaper when buying from the US with international shipping.  It just comes down to whether you need something in a week or a month or two.
https://www.thevalvestore.com.au/  tubes for hifi
http://tubeaudio.com.au/  New to me.  Guitar amp focussed.  Not a huge selection of parts.
https://amptubes.com.au/ just tubes.
https://hamradiohouse.com.au/  “The Australian boatanchor shop”.
And, of course, the Australian arms of the big boys, RS Components, Mouser, Digikey, etc.

I think we can ad Hawk electronics to the list (hawkusa.com).   They have minimum order amount, but it's pretty low ($25) and the prices seem really good.
I just ordered a small Hammond OT and Choke over the weekend and it just arrived (4 Business days).    Granted they sent me the wrong choke (200H vs 4H), but they responded within minutes to my concern via email.

The 1750C OT was $27.90 vs other vendors at $33+.  Shipping costs are slightly higher, but still a little bit of savings.

Update on Hawk.   Good guys.   They let me keep this huge choke (not sure what to do with it yet) and they will send the correct choke.  That is a $50 value.   A good store for picking up hammond Iron and enclosures.  Not sure about passive components as most appear to be NTE (i'm not familiar with the brand quality).

Doug so far as been the best on cost to ship to speed ratio for me, but I do live ~2 hours away so USPS never screws it up.

Everything else is expensive and a wash. Dont ship USPS right now. go UPS or fedex.

On a production run go mouser/digikey. High volume.

For transformers Ive had luck with mouser and hawk. Hawk typically sells at the mouser volume price which is nice. They have fewer options in some cases.

Otherwise I find the tubedepot site easier to navigate they have been pretty good about shipping next day. Relatively quick turnaround. For some components AES have both cheaper and better parts. They are all in the same tier IMO.

I like to buy mojotone cabs/tolex.

All this being said.. AES takes a day longer to get to me than tubedepot on the east coast. Mojotone ships slower and can have wait times on custom work but should be expected. My preference is Doug->Tube Depot->AES. If you try and price the lowest components from each online retailer youll eat up the difference in shipping costs and complexity.

Brick and mortar there is a newish shop called micro center thats got a few locations around the country. RIP Radioshack.

I placed an order on the 24th; the items were all shown as in stock. So far, no shipment, no email. When I have bought stuff from them in the past, it has always gone out same-day.

Turns out I don’t even need what I ordered, but if there is a “how to cancel an order” section of their website, I haven’t found it.

A new microcenter? No, seems to be the same one founded 1979 by two ex-Shack guys, currently 25 stores. Primarily computers, but they do have a modest pile of STEM-type parts.

They compete against Fry's which just locked its doors and sent the stuff back to the factories.
