Hi all.

So...I built a Proluxe head a while back with the original intention of matching it up to a 3x10 cab I had that would serve double duty for harp and guitar.

In the build I:

1- isolated the volume controls/channels
2- changed the tone cap on the bright channel to a lower value to serve as the guitar channel
3- kept the normal channel stock for harp and given the lack of need for treble

The amp sounds excellent.

Now, a little more back story...

Earlier this year, I found a Leslie 825 in good shape that had already had the SS amp removed for 150.00.  Motor was fine. Stock speaker.  Plus a Leslie II preamp.

Earlier earlier... :) ... I had been given a top section from a Leslie 910. They weigh about as much as a Twin reverb.  Crazy heavy. It was a spare for the complete 910 my organ player bought for our local/if he didn't have to travel far gig set up. For free..why not.

I thought why not make a custom/touring 2 speaker Leslie that wasn't that heavy and tube driven.  And so I did.

Cut out baffles for the top of the 825.  Cut down the horn mounting from the 910 and installed it in the top of the 825. Built a crossover.  Bought a high power Neo Eminence 12" for the bottom (just could not make a 15" work). Made a low voltage motor relay system that works off my Hammond's half moon.  Added new back panels, supports here and there, and a tweeter attenuator.  Boom..one very portable and great sounding Leslie.

So, I dedicated the Proluxe to the Leslie and it drives the Leslie incredible well and it is very very loud.  Without question, the organ can be the loudest instrument in the band...which was the point because I love organ.  Using a 12au in V1 because anything else was too much really and it now makes sense I think why the 122 amps used AU's.

But I was thinking...the 122 amps do not have a tone control at all.  Just straight up, wide open amplification.  Why not try that with this Proluxe?  Right now..I have to essentially turn the Tone all the way off (to 12) so that the organ's freq range can shine.

So the question really is and from those that have either done it with a 5E3 or a Proluxe...was the additional gain too much?  I should gain more Treble right but will the additional gain put me right back as if I was running a 12ax7 in V1?

I mean..it is one lift of a cap end to test but it would nice to know from others if I can avoid it.  I was considering a toggle somewhere on the chassis to lift the bright channels tone cap Off/On depending if I am running organ or guitar.

Thoughts?

I also considered getting a 6a/6.3v DC tranny and using 6550's but I think it would really require a bigger OT to really get the gains (running a BF Pro OT now).

Thanks!

LOL...well I assume no one has tried this then

I am going to go a different route I think.

I am going to play with the PI cathode bypass cap and or adding negative feedback.

I saw some vids on the changes when removing the BP cap and it seems like a god solution.  Put it on a switch and call it a day.
