Hubert Sumlin has passed
« on: December 10, 2011, 01:35:14 pm »
Played for Howlin Wolf on Chess Records. He was 80. Hendricks said the only 3 guitar players who ever scared him were Hubert, Albert King, and Otis Rush. Albert and Otis played left handed and upside down. All 3 had some of the most soulful, strange, almost unearthly, quivering, crying, string bend vibrato ever heard. I think that's what Jimi was hearing/feeling that "scared" him.

None of them could get that finger vibrato!!! You name me one player who could get that sound, not a single one, to this day.

Wolf was not Wolf with out Hubert!

To me here's some of the best stuff, Three Hundred Pounds Of Joy, 1963.

I've never heard any one get this kind of finger vibrato and tone from his fingers, both left and right!!! Hubert also had a very different feel for timing, listen for the up strokes he hits at times.

Here's one that's Wolf from one of Wolfs early recordings, all Wolfs recordings were very different than Muddy Waters. Every thing kinda floats, instead of the "parts" being nailed down. More free like jazz?

This is an old friend of mine from Chicago. Dave Spector, interviewing Hubert.

Hubert Sumlin Talks About Playing With Howlin Wolf And The American Folk Blues Festival

I knew Hubert (a little). He was a very nice guy. Got a few stories to tell about him, but too sad right now.
