Next amp project suggestions, please?
« on: March 17, 2012, 11:42:29 pm »
I have recently completed my first amp build (5E3 from a kit) and as many have said I am itching to build again. I fortunately had no problems following a layout and schematic and was happy with the result, so I would like to try something somewhat more challanging. I would like to build something in the dumbley vein. I do not play out so keeping the wattage low is fine. I have seen various d'lite style amps and they look interesting but would like some input from those who have built something of this nature. I did PM someone regarding his Champ D'lite but have not heard back yet. I would like the amp to have good touch dynamics, and smooth od, and such. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Calling Tubenet & Geezer!

These 2 guy's (among others here) have taken time to search out that smooth over drive/distortion tone and are who I'd call on for help on this type of gig.

They have many _ proven _ Dumbell-X type amp builds, +/with channel switching, Fx loops, Reverb, etc, that are _ very _ well documented.

I am happy with my Tweed BluezMeister (14w & 6V6)  and my Tweed Overdrive Special (23w & 5881).

Both are D-inspired amps. These are my two favorite amps of all I have played or built.

Being cathode biased, I can go with 6V6 or 5881/6L6 in either amp without rebiasing.

I have some soundclips if you're genuinely interested.

Thanks for the responses!! The Tweed BluezMeister sounds like it might be what I am looking for. Tubenit, your clip of Slow Blues III sounds great! the transition from the clean to the light OD kicked in was awesome. The tone is smooth and articulate with and without the OD. Was that done with the 6V6's in the amp? I did a bit of checking and there seems to be a BOM that Mr. Hoffman put together. Is that taken from the most recent TBM schematic? Also he has a drilled board listed, is that based on the most recent layout? Looking at the schematic is appears that it will certainly be a big step up in the challange department, but the tone and dynamics in the clips I listened to draw me in. I appreciate everyone taking the time to respond!

Yes, it used Tung-sol Re-issue 6V6's.  Since it is a combo vs head/cab, the TBM is the amp I play the most.  My grab & go amp.

The original  TBM has evolved, but I am thinking the Hoffman layout can be adapted to still work? IF I have time, I'll try to take a look at it and answer that question.

The BOM would also be off. I'd look at it in light of the schematic I posted and make changes accordingly.

You can also just use his board material and turrets to make a paralleled turret board.

Yes,  Hoffman's  TBM layout does work for my current version of the Tweed BluezMeister.  No problem.  So just buy one of Doug's boards with turrets.

I redid the TBM Hoffman style layout to reflect my current version.  IF there are differences between the layout and schematic .......... go with the schematic.

CHECK for errors!  Compare schematic and layout.

( I updated the SCH Library with this also)

Thanks much for the quick response!! I will print out the new layout, schematic, and compare to BOM and make changes as needed. Then start shopping!
Regards!

Simple response is you have mostly cap values changed & some more smoothing caps added.

A few resistor changes with most notable being the power tube cathode resistor.  Using 360R allows me to use either 6V6 or 5881/6L6 without rebiasing.

Trim boost relay pot is gone.  Master volume is just rewired different.

Mid tone pot is changed to 100k.

OD hi-cut pot is simply rewired as a tone pot.

That's about it, I think.  Check for yourself.

IF you update the BOM, could you post a new version here on this thread please?

Ah I see - the 360R is an update you made specifically for swapping the tubes. And the 6K6 must be fairly comfortable with that value as well. Still searching through discussions on your TBM. Awesome stuff, man. Thanks again - n
