Hired to be Kim Mitchell's Guitar and Amp tech!
« on: August 26, 2012, 01:00:51 pm »
I got a call the other day from Toronto and on the line was Kim Mitchell asking if I could be hired to tech for him and his bass player a few days later in my home town!  I said HELL yeah!

He was a very nice guy.  Easy gig for me.

The backline was two Marshall jcm800's (100W) on stage.  I decided to just use one head to run two 4x12 cabs in parallel at 8 ohms.I kept both amps on stage for the look but we only used one head.  I had another 4x12 cab connected to the unused head behind just in case the main head went down for any reason. This way the backup head was "on" with a load.

The bass rig was two Ampeg SVT's (modern) with a 31 band eq inserted in line.  I sent signal from the first svt head preamp out to the second svt head power amp in.  This was so the musician could power two 8x10 cabs from the one svt head.

The gig went fantastic.  I was responsible for handing Kim his guitars during the set and keeping things in tune.

I spent some time with the band after the show talking about music and gear.  Great bunch of guys.  I hope at some point I'll work as a tech again.  Kim did ask for my contact info, so here is hoping!

All in all a fun experience for me.

Movin' on up! Congrats. Don't forget us little guys.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Too cool!  Man I love Kim!  I spent hours trying to learn Go for a soda!  Glad to hear he is a nice guy.  Congrats!

I would have been mighty surprised if the originator of "buddy rock" wasn't a nice guy. I listen to his radio show on Q107 once in awhile and he is mighty ... normal. Seeing pix of him without a baseball cap and a fringe of hair is cognitively dissonant and making my brain hurt.
Congratulations!

Opened up for him in, of all places, Iroquois Falls. When I met him he was recently divorced and a little bitter about the experience. When I introduced him to my wife after the show he kept making quips about marriage.

He's a very underated guitar player/song writer.
