Turret Installation Tool
« on: September 21, 2013, 05:08:48 pm »
Get rid of you hammers and that tool (stake tool I spent 10 bucks on)....the "easiest" way to put them in securely is with a spring loaded center punch...Hammering them in was a pain in the rear....I was hammering a few in when the vibration on the table made my spring loaded center punch roll off on the floor.....when I picked it up I had a brainstorm.....I put the turret board on a 2 x 4 and snapped that center punch 3 times thru the turret and it was good and tight......So then I went and spent 3 bucks at Harbor Freight for a cheaper one and rounded off the point so it doesn't go all the way thru the turret....it's Perfect.

Look at the bottom of page 135 in the Keystone Electronics catalog. They call it an "impact staking tool".

If you ever get to the point of doing a bunch of boards, you'll almost certainly find life easier if you use a drill press to drill out the boards. At that point, the recommended process is to remove the drill bit, place the pointy tool in the table of the press and put the other tool in the chuck of the press. A fairly light pull on the drill press handle secures the lug.

I must've drilled and installed turrets on at least 60-80 boards (possibly more) and that's the easiest production method. A bench-top drill press can perhaps be justified if you are also drilling your own amp chassis.

A bench-top drill press can be justified easier than that! If you have the room, it's simply a phenomenally useful tool.

Yes... A bench-top drill press is indispensable. And you can get one for under $100. I've just about worn mine out.
