Subject of the Week Study
« on: January 31, 2013, 03:53:15 pm »
Is there is any interest in a technical topic study of the week? Basically come up with a technical topic and let interested parties discuss, rant, inform, teach, etc... as long as the end result is informative.

Volunteer hosts would be a good means of changing the learning scale from beginner to expert.

Example- After this I'm going to post a question regarding the interaction between different voltage levels, values of resistor and value-type of capacitor, networks have on V1a input for preamps. How do these different combos effect the tonal attributes since I'm working through my first build and trying to figure out tweeks.

This would be a good idea if the discussion is a separate board within the forum.

One popular forum with which PRR is familiar has a "Drawing Board" for theoretical discussions and "The Lab" for actual builds or tweaks on an existing circuit.

Throwing out other ideas:
It also would be reasonable for the presenter to make reference to online books, as writing a "How Electronics Work" from the ground up is an immense task and has already been done in print and online many, many times.

It might be reasonable to have folks PM a presenter to request/suggest topics, as you might get to the point faster if the presenter pours out an overview before questions are asked to refine the information.

It might be reasonable for no questions to be posted on the thread at all, but to be an "article" format. However, questions could be sent to the presenter via PM, who could then also edit the existing post to include clarification of the parts which raised the questions.

It might be reasonable to remove the character limit for a post, as some things just can't be taught in 5,000 characters or less. But this would likely be nixed, as the rule limits abuse of the forum.

I think one of my early posts had to be sliced three ways to fit in a 1,000 byte limit, I muttered something, and the limit was 5,000 bytes.

AFAIK, only two people routinely "abuse" the extra 4,000 characters. (And ditch-digging has really blunted _my_ typing.) I suppose it is possible under a higher limit some spammer could post 10,000 word about man-pills or somesuch; but they usually just link to a site where they get paid for hits.

It is also possible that the forum Admin can define a 'group' with higher post limits. (Might be some workaround like being a Mod with no sections.) Then whoever needs huge-post ability would ask to be in that group.
