BYOC Phase Royal & Analog Chorus
« on: February 03, 2014, 12:20:46 pm »
Just finished these 2 builds and de-bugging.  Build 3 hours each de-bugging phaser 2 months LOL.
The chorus pretty much mimics my old MIJ Boss C2 which is what I was looking for.  The old boss got very thin sounding and I took it to several repair shops as recommended by others to which made it worse and non repairable.  Very happy with the BYOC build and quality of the kit.
The Phase Royal was I bit more difficult build as in you need to go to their forum and read on it before you build, there are several does and donts and as you probably already guessed no I did not read before i built.  Heck I have built lots of pedals why read before you build WRONG!!!!  I had put the pots too close to the board and and got 2 solder pads almost touching which lead to some very weird undesirable sounding phase shifting but once moved and cleaned up it sounds like a vintage Phase 45 or 90.  I was looking for that deep lush phase sound like the older EXH small stone but it does not quite get there.  It is a great sounding pedal but I think I am going to try their Soaring Skillet which is a copy of the old Flying Pan as they say it has a deeper phase like the small stone plus it pan's and I don't have one of those so it is a must build.  I am a pedal junkie.

I'm glad that the ana chorus sounds like the MIJ boss rig. that's good news bcuz the dang mij boss pedals are getting way out of range cost wize.

were there any non-common components in the chorus?

Actually the MIJ C2 has come down they can be had for under 100 now some still on ebay for 200+ but usually dont move.
I just decided to try and build that one this way I know it is new and will last several years.  Not sure on the common non-common components but BYOC has the pdf schematic of theirs on their web page.  As far as I remember the chips were the same JRC #er's. Sold the old Boss MIJ on E-bay as not working correctly.

You can find the CE-2 for under $100 but it's rare to see one sell for under a C-note on ebay. The ones listed there for stupid money usually languish without a bid. I found a near mint MIJ CE-2 on Craigslist last month for $40. Occasionally you find someone who isn't hip to vintage pricing or has not done their homework. I had a CE-3 that I strongly disliked and I ended up trading it to my girlfriend's son. I love this CE-2. I use it in front of my Marshall JCM800 clone. Lush.
Some of the most amazing music in history was made with equipment that's not as good as what you own right now.
