Need help adding some 5E5A to a 5E3
« on: March 13, 2015, 01:33:34 pm »
Here's a cut and pasted idea that I'm building based off of a 5E3 ....build is in progress.

I am adding the second gain stage and cathode follower from the 5E5A pro schematic as shown. (minus the NFB, for now)
I'm doing this because i'll be using 6L6GCs and I feel like they will need a little more signal to drive them well.
I'm not trying to mimic the exact circuit of the 5E5A, but just use some of the topology to get where I'm going.

So,,,stock 5E3 preamp and then switchable extra gain stage, CF, and bass control.

I'm going to leave the stock 5E3 treble cut tone control and would just like to add in the bass control from the 5E5A when that part of the circuit is switched in (as pictured in my first schematic)

I'm not sure how to compensate for the fact that I won't be using the treble control from the 5E5A circuit.
My question comes from the way that the treble and bass controls appear to be 'mixed'(?).

Can I just put the bass control there like I have it and still expect a decent amount of bass control?
Any suggestions for improvement?

Some time ago I helped a friend to develope this

He uses the FXLoop section only as FXLoop but you can refine it as to have also the purpose of OD section

and the input section (that has two different Tone Controls) can be arranged also to not only A or B but also to be A+B

Thanks Franco!

Reading a little bit more into it I'm considering using this single knob bass control from the Gibson GA-30

Similar to the Clubman 35

I've this, but I'm not sure if the cap values must be equal as shown (??)

That looks interesting....
Looks like it's from Merlin's preamp book....I have it and i'll look that up

Thanks for the suggestion!

:w2: Since when do you have time for circuit ideas anymore???
To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research.

Well, now that I've cleaned up all of that damn sawdust,,,I have moved on.  :icon_biggrin:

If you go back and look at my fist schematic, I was asking a really dumb question.
When I wired it that way it was a very obviously pathetic volume control. I don't know what I was thinking...

So I'm gonna go with the Matchless idea above, cause all I was looking for was a bass control that would be switched into the circuit with the gain stage + CF.

Duh...
Let's chalk that one up to glue inhalation.   :think1:

BTW,what glue were you using?

Why not just make a 5E5A with a pair of 6V6's, same tube count, same pre (-treble cut), same PI and you get 2 tone controls?

I was asking a really dumb question

I've asked a couple lately also, maybe Doug needs to update his dumb question filter :dontknow:

Gorilla brand wood glue

The guy I'm building it for wanted a 5E3 circuit and it was my idea to give him the switchable option.
I prefer the tone of 6L6, so I'm doing low B+ to get the breakup but with a little more headroom and the wider response of the 6L6
I'll take the actual build notes to another thread....that schematic was thrown together

And that's where my interest came from.  :icon_biggrin:

Between you and Plexi50 I couldn't ignore the idea, especially with how close the topology was for each amp.

I've got some tweaking to do, but I think it's a pretty cool amp so far.

That schematic I posted is pretty close to what I have built.
