I have a critique if I may on equipment demo's in general and this may not be the best place and timing?
 
It's okay to hear songs or passages but when I want to hear an amp, guitar, or pedal being demo'd - I appreciate minimal words and not too much song playing (to not be overly time consuming) and instead mostly riffs, chord changes, and not too much noodling without frequent changes in all the settings. Equipment demos can take long enough as it is. Also, the last thing I need to hear is somebody trying to be EVH, Gibbons, Beck, Page, etc... it almost always takes away from the point of the demo in the first place. And I will raise my hand at being guilty here too...it's a fine line. 
 
It shouldn't be "look at me", it should be check out this beautiful sound or cool sizzling OD and the way it sustains off...etc... then hit a chord or note and let it sustain a while... This may not seem very entertaining to the average listener but it is important to a person considering to build something similar or a with perspective buyer. Trying to accomplish an equipment demo AND a nice sounding composition are not generally enharmonic (to use a musical term).

Where are the backing tracks?!?!?!  I heard some great Carlton and Gibbons in there!!!!  You need to play complete songs!

First off, really nice sounding amp.  You know I like a nice transparent sound and this certainly nails that.

Second, that is some really tasty playing.  You REALLY need to post some additional work.  That was awesome.

BTW,  no tele's were used or harmed on these soundclips.  I used the DIY 335.

Nice presentation.  I know exactly what you mean.  It is not possible for me to get on sound samples what an amp is really like.  With me about half is tone of the amp and a lot of amps sound very similar.  The other half is how it feels and how it inspires you.  For instance, if I plug into an amp that drives hard I play hard driving stuff.  When you get it set just right and that guitar begins to feel alive in your hands and you just cannot record that, only the music that comes from it.  Also just as soon as you do get everything just right and feel jazzed up someone usually says could you turn down just a little.


Very irritating to me.  I have made literally hundreds of recordings to show off a couple of amps and after listening to them I feel like they do more harm than good.  I know guys like to hear them, but how many times have you heard a youtube demo and liked it only to find it lacking when playing the real thing.

I agree, nothing can recreate that guitar coming alive feel that usually comes with some VOLUME    What is VERY frustrating is completing something that sounds great with the headphones or nice speakers only to resemble an AM radio on the computer speakers....   I always listen to these clips with headphones - it makes a big difference.

On the topic of recording amps for demonstration purposes, what do you think is the best way to do it?

A mic right up against the grill cloth, or a bit further away from the amp to get the sound of the amp in the room?

Cassax, that is a VERY good question!  We tried to hash this out a while back and I don't think we came to any conclusion.  Feel free to give your opinion/experience!

I know it's an old topic but really not because we're probably listening to stuff constantly and I didn't want to start a new topic because I'm always in the old archives and figure a lot of people are too. I just wanted to say that if possible and of course if you want to please me which I'm sure the whole world does(😥)... like to hear chords clean and dirty that are left to ring out completely, until the very last silence, on amplifiers and maybe especially dirt pedals and I'm the first to admit that I always forget to do this, and I'm definitely one of those noodle on forever fools. And also there's some really great builders that might not be the greatest of players but I totally welcome hearing their amplifiers and always listening with big ears, and can hear through to the Core...( meaning I have heard some people that might not play that great but can tell that the amp they built sounds pretty darn good and give complete credit for their input especially overcoming the possible insecurity or whatever they might feel about their  playing... if we were all Allan Holdsworth... I'd probably move to the Bassoon. Oh and I also don't mind a run-through of the range of tone controls especially if the poster can be heard saying something like here I am Twisting  the mid control, or something like that,and the gain  control from 0 to 10... stuff like that. It never hurts the list the recording path or if it's just into an iPhone or whatever. It seems like the compressor on the damn phone is more musical than my script logo mxr.

Looking back on this (since S&P resurrected it) I still feel a little badly for unfairly criticizing tubenit on his subittal or at least I feel I could've stated or phrased things better? Sorry for that Mr T.
There's no right or wrong on how to do a sound demo and after giving further thought to it aside from watching and listening to many more along the way - I'm realizing I prefer a video of the amp or pedal (or even guitar or speaker) with no talking and the ability to simply watch the settings and controls being changed while listening. No matter if playing just chords and solos/notes or playing with a backing track. Doing this there's no time wasted or words necessary and the viewer takes everything into account on their own.

I thought it was a very reasonable criticism and appropriate.  I took zero offense to it at all.

My preference is also videos with very minimal talking to explain any unique amp features that shape a particular tone.  I've just never gotten around to trying to make a video before. I may do that at some point.

Having said that Mat (from Finland) and DaGeezer's audio soundclips are so good I've repeatedly listened to them over and over for many years.

My playing is mediocre on a good day so typically when I record something my 1st goal is having fun (since I'm not going to dazzle anyone with my playing) and 2nd goal to allow some sense of what the amp can potentionally sound like.  That's why I've done backing tracks most of the time.
