Lodestar
« on: January 08, 2017, 09:50:50 am »
Greetings. New build on the bench. Basically a single channel AB763 with a few tweaks (raw control, NFB switch, etc.).

Looks great!

How does it sound?

Where did you get the face plate?

I love the burgundy tolex!  The amp looks fantastic.  Nice job and thanks for sharing your success.

And how could we also not compliment how the grille cloth goes with the burgundy tolex?
Congratulations.

What speaker do you have in there?

Thanks, gents! I designed the face and rear plates myself, using Corel Draw, and had them laser engraved at a local trophy shop. My last two cabs were made by Mojo. Their cab maker does fine work. I'll probably go back to doing my own cabs when the weather warms up, just for fun.

The amp sounds pretty darn good. It's my first 6L6, fixed bias amp. Definitely loud. It seems a bit noisy, but it could be the lighting in my basement (fluorescent bulbs). I chose an Eminence Signature Series GA-SC64 for it. Liking it, so far. I'll try to do some sound files if I get a chance.

Very nice looking design.  :icon_biggrin:

So, it's back engraved plastic and then they painted the engraved part with white?

Where did you get the verb/vibrato foot switch pedal cable or did you make it? It looks like nice quality heavy duty wire.

No, the face plate material is a sandwich with a black face and white core. It's the same technique they use to make sports trophies and plaques.

From Wikipedia:
For signage and face plates, etc., special laser-marked plastics were developed. These incorporate silicate or other materials which conduct excess heat away from the material before it can deform. Outer laminates of this material vaporize easily to expose different colored material below.

I also had them do some 18-watt plates which were clear with a gold back. Those were engraved from the back to remove the gold (plexi style), but the Lodestar plates were front engraved.

The foot switches are nice, but red and yellow RCA plugs kind of clash with the vintage look I prefer.

The chrome ones have the same connectors as the black ones, not black connectors like the picture shows. Has anyone put different connectors on these? I imagine they use shielded wire, but I hate to hack one up to find out.
