Anybody want to let me in on the secret of the Naked Dave Friedman preamp tone??? ;-) I'm going to build something that is loud like the Rhodes Marshall, but gain like the Friedman...

I went and listened to a bunch of youtube videos of these amps, having never heard of them before.  Then I see Bill from Mastodon has a signature model, which is named like the Butthurtslax or something equally terrible.   Sure the amps sound good, but I'm sure they are just some more common High gain stuff (JCM800 with extra gain stage, SLO etc.) with some bells and whistles here and there.  I could be wrong.

I do love Mastodon though.

After watching a few more, they always seem to have huge rack rigs running into these amps, and they almost immediately dump the volume on the guitar when they stop playing, I bet they are noisy. I'd like to see someone with an SG plugged straight into one without a huge pile of effects and religious volume knob control at the end of each riff.

There are quite a few drawings out there on the Brown Eye.  Maybe you can start there?

Yeah I found those, they're horribly written up, and I had no idea wth the guy was trying to explain, but basically it seems like an extra tube for more gain, and some simple tone tweaks via switches.  It's a pretty stock Marshall circuit, I can't remember which one, that's been dialed in more precisely to be gainier.

BTW, Ritchie, I keep wanting to ask you, who's blowing up in your gif ;P

Excellent!  ROCK AND ROLL! :D the gif makes it look like Ritchie lit on fire, but instead, in the video he's moving away nice and slow and like it's all as planned :)

Phil,

Actually you are correct.  If you look close, you will see Ritchie throw his head back after the explosion.  That little puff of flame is actually his hair on fire.  The explosion blew Ian Paice's glasses off - but he kept playing. Glen Hughes was not running to see if Ritchie was OK, he was running because he couldn't breathe in the cloud of CO fire extinguisher smoke - and he kept playing.  The amp that was thrown off the stage was a dummy as it had a blown OP transformer (Gasp! No!).  It got blown off the stack to the stage and then thrown about 20 feet to the ground.  Dawk retrieved it.  After all that it had one broken KT88.  That's it.  Considering they weigh a good 95lbs that is amazing. He popped in a new OP tranny and it was used through the DP, Rainbow, and DP reunion years, painted white and then re-housed in newer cabinets. Dawk collected all of Ritchie's Majors after he went ENGL and offered to sell me THE Cal Jam Major.  Fearing divorce and still wanting to have enough money to continue to make payments on my house, I had to pass.  I should have sold a kidney and bought it....

"The Story" has a few inaccuracies.  DP had a late afternoon outdoor gig in Arizona the next day.  Even though listed as co-headliners they made almost 3X what ELP did and insisted on going on at sunset - which was written in the contract as they had some new lighting they wanted to try out.  This would also give the roadies time to break down and get on the road before all the people were leaving - that is the ONLY reason ELP closed the show.  The camera man, ABC reps, and Cal Jam reps were badgering Ritchie in his dressing room for hours.  The camera man asking if he was going to smash his guitar, and the others demanding that he and the band go on early.  The DP road crew was unplugging stuff as fast as the Cal Jam crew were plugging it in trying to delay.  After the ABC and Cal Jam reps threatened to drop them from the bill, one of DP's roadies got on the microphone and asked the crowd if they were ready to see DP.  The crowd went ape and the organizers backed off.  At this point Ritchie had had it.  Then when they went on stage the camera man immediately positioned himself in front of Ritchie blocking him from the crowd.  Ritchie then spent the whole show standing on the camera dolly tracks to prevent the guy from getting in front again, then took out his frustration at the end by beating the crap out of the camera.  He told the roadies to put a little extra petrol in the cabinets as he wanted to make a point.  ABC sued the band for over $250K in damages and the camera man wanted to press assault charges.  Another stage hand said the explosion caused hearing damage (probably not from the explosion but from the other two Majors!).  The Fire Marshall wanted the band and crew arrested.  After they left the stage, the band jumped on a helicopter direct to the airport and they immediately flew out to Arizona on the DP Starship.  An apology letter was written, no payments were made, no charges were filed.  ABC had footage that gave them huge ratings for their In Concert series.  Deep Purple and Ritchie had cemented their legacy as the biggest most dangerous live band in the world, much like Jimi had done at Monterey.

The rest of the story!

You should copy and paste all this into a word doc for every time you need to re-post any of it and save a lot of time going forward? Better yet, do an informative article type paper as you've done before? Believe it or not you're wearing me down on him especially after that latest movie.

As suspected, typical hodrodded Marshall.  I guess he wants $3800 for the Bill Kelliher one.. Yikes.
