I had a couple pickups laying around
« on: May 18, 2017, 09:45:52 pm »
So I made this:

It's just a neck and body from Warmoth, as I had (for a brief moment) more money than time (though not much of either!) which I finished as quickly as I could.

Even as a guitar builder, new guitar day is freaking awesome!!!

Lollar string through steel pickup for the bridge, and a Lollar gold foil for the neck.  It's influenced (but not a copy of) Ry Cooder's main slide guitar.

How do you that Lollar gold foil?

Can you describe it's sound a little for us compared to a Strat and HB?

I've head say they sound great.

       Thanks, Brad

It's nice.  Very clear, kind of bell like.  It's not as bright as a Strat, and a lot lower output than a HB.  But they're both a lot harder to control than more conventional pickups.  I had them cranked up through the AC30 and the Dumblesque amp.  It sounds great, but man it is a lot of work to keep it in line.  Neither of the pickups are potted, and it is quite prone to squealing.  Still, it doesn't sound like anything else I've got, and it makes some great noises.  There is one thing kind of odd - the string through pickup has two reverse wound coils under each set of three strings, but not reverse polarity on the magnets so when you run both pickups half the strings are out of phase, and the other half are in phase.  It's just the nature of the pickups, and I'll just run them individually.
