Tos build done
« on: September 28, 2010, 01:49:19 pm »
Just got done really airing it out had to make some cathode cap changes to get the perfect sound on the OD channel. This thing has sustain for days or as you guys say it blooms really well, its very articulate . in other words if your a sloppy picker like me youll hear every little nuance of your style. That alone will make me a much better guitar player who ever thought an amp could do that.
The volume knob controls shapes your sound so much on both channels it really allows you to change what type of sound you want just by the volume knob alone.
 Great amp thanks guys,
I will discuss what I changed and why later if anyone really wants to know. I will try and get some clips up but as I just realized my sound card is down so i cant record. Time for a new one Ive nursed this one far to long should have one by tomorrow. Bill

Excellent! Glad you got it up and running.

Yes, please share any tweaks that you like and when you can some sound clips.

At least one of the guys on AmpGarage has built one and the sound clips are just fantastic! Seems several of the guys on that forum are planning to build one also.

They really do have the blooming thing and sustain going on which I like.

Will look forward to hearing whatever you share.  :icon_thumleft:

As you guys well know guitar pickups and transformers expecially output transformers, along with tubes make a huge differance in how one amp sounds compared to another. So my strat has emg high gain pickups my transformers are weber and all I had was some JJ 6l6,s to put in.

Because most of what I wrote here turned out to be wrong I deleted it. thank You Bill

The clean channel in my estimation is probably one of the best I have heard.

But in reality I would say please look at this piece of information then you will have the math for yourselves and an explination from someone who really has a clue unlike me.   http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=31336

Just reread my post above i really shouldnt try and post at 10:00 at night when Ive been up since 4:00Am
After going through my notes some of my problem could have been that I missed the change from 150k to 56k on the plates of 5879 tube  And my poor speaker choice of carvin british series because i had them and didnt want to buy more, could have helped also. Played for a bit this morning I really love this thing
On the clean Cranked up I get like this perfect sweet home alabama thing the way i thought it should have always sounded but had eluded me till now. on the OD channel I get this montrose rock the nation over driven marshall thats just killer. i cant wait to hear it when my caps have settled in. AWSOME!

Hey Tubenit!

Any Idea how many of these have been built in various configurations?

HI Tone, I red the post from metroamps and it sounded like a good idea but it didn't sound to good ( the amp sounded dead)i put the cap/resistors on a rotary switch to keep the original sound. So if it is at all possible to post a schem to check my work, that would be great. Thanks

Timbo here is what i found after playing some more, What I thought to be to bassy on the overdrive circuit really wasnt the problem at all you see Im only on my 4th  amp, a lesson learned on my part, what works good on a marshall doesnt mean its perfect for this amp, I have two things going differant first I built this with the one tube reverb , second what I took for being to bassy on the distortion channel was the fact that with my EMG pickups and the 1 tube reverb i was actually causing it to hit my PI to hard, this is a very balanced circuit right on the edge the cure wasnt the change in cathode values like i thought it would be but bleeding off some of the signal after the 5879 right at the .01 cap where it goes of to the od level pot I put a 220k resister to ground fixed the problem. I borrowed my friends tele with single coils on the neck and had to put almost all of those values back to were they started. The only one i left differant was the first one with a 2.2 uf and a 1k resister. man it sucks being a newbie   Bill

One more thing I have a lot to learn, what works good for a 12ax7 isnt the same for other tubes like a 12ay7 and expecially a 5879 tube. But I do think the 12 ay7 is one of my new favorits tubes it makes the extra gain stage on my marshall sound (SWEET). Bill

Jeff thank you for putting this out there for us . this is a very sweet and unique amp if you turn all the volumes up this a super high gain beast turn it around and lower the main volume and the clean volume a bit and put it on the clean channel and it has one of the richest clean sounds i have heard.
